Why have we not heard more about this beautiful secluded island.
Fresh air straight from the Southern Ocean!
A long-anticipated seventieth birthday stay at Southern Ocean Lodge, on Kangaroo Island literally having gone up in smoke, we cast around for somewhere equally attractive, different and delightful. It had to be an island; it had to be beautiful; and it had to be easily accessible.
And we found it! At Porky Beach Retreat on Tasmania’s splendidly pristine, blissfully isolated, breathtakingly beautiful King Island!
Hosts Alexandra and Russell provide six-star accommodation and seven- star plus hospitality in their modern, capacious, supremely comfortable house overlooking Little Porky Beach on King Island’s rugged, west coast.
The property’s 4x4, of which we have exclusive use for our four-day stay, is waiting for us in the airport carpark.
Alexandra offers us a very warm welcome to her impeccably presented and luxuriously appointed retreat.
Outside, just off the deck, warm in the glow of the setting sun, one of the island’s many wallabies regards us cautiously as Alex points out the pathway to the sheltered beach below.
Inside, there is restaurant-quality kitchen with food sufficient for all our needs and some!
A cheeseboard of everybody’s favourite King Island Dairy cheeses rests invitingly on the dining room table beside a freshly decanted local Pinot.
Upstairs everything in our suite is just so, and Alex leads our guided tour with the subtle practised pride of an exemplary hostess.
Our days are filled with her recommended scenic and artistic sites to visit - King Island really is a hidden gem!
Fresh clean air blows in from the Southern Ocean, and at night from the deck , the milky way glistens brightly across the blackness above. What a place to...
Read moreThe decision to travel to King Island was largely determined by the choice of accommodation. We'd been warned about the winter weather and wanted to feel like we were having a special holiday even if it was blustery and we were stuck indoors. I am so, so glad we chose Porky Beach House.
Despite being the middle of winter, the weather was unseasonably warm and we spent a lot of time at the beach right in front of the house. We did not see a single other beachgoer the whole time we were there and felt we'd landed in paradise. Every afternoon we would come back to the house and jump in the hot tub, sipping champagne and watching the wallabies whilst the sauna heated up. Then we'd flick in and out of the sauna, pottering about as we made dinner or lit the fire ready for the evening.
The house itself had everything we could have hoped for (apart from a lasagne dish - we improvised!) and Alexandra had thought of everything including a wide array of board games, books and outdoor equipment. Although there was wifi we spent our time offline and screen-free which was blissful in itself.
From the moment we arrived, met with glasses of sparkling and an impressive welcome platter, nothing was too much for Alexandra. She made us feel so incredibly welcome it was like meeting a long-lost friend, someone who was so excited to see you and to ensure your stay was perfect. We've stayed in a lot of beautiful accommodation around the world, but what Alexandra and Russell offer is something else - genuine, generous and warm hospitality in an idyllic environment. We're already planning our next visit.
Alexandra, thank...
Read moreAir Adventure packaged a terrific 3 day escape to King Island for golf, outdoor activity and food experiences. Accommodation at Porkys Beach Retreat was outstanding with much care given to our experience by owners Alexandra & Russell. Flights via Sharp Air were extremely efficient and with the exception of a scheduling mishap for which solutions were quickly found all went smoothly. Golf at Ocean Dunes and Cape Wickham world class and thanks in particular to Tracey and Norell at Ocean Dunes who with limited facilities went out of their way to make our experience fabulous. Lobster Rolls a highlight. Cape Wickham a brilliant course but overall but maybe lacking customer culture and facilities expected of high value customers. However appreciated the courtesies of John the course...
