I am envious when I read everyone else’s reviews of their wonderful experience at Mavis’s. No doubt Mavis’s is usually a great place for ‘a slow Sunday lunch’ (as someone put it) with great service and excellent food but our Sunday lunch started off too slowly and the errors kept coming. I booked 1pm Sunday four weeks in advance and never once in the 3 or 4 email reminders was ‘Art in the Shed’ mentioned or that the place would be pandemonium but oh boy, it was all we heard about for the rest of the day as an excuse for errors. We arrived promptly at 1pm after a 4 hour drive. My husband waited 15 mins at the table while I took a trip to the over-patronised ladies loo. 15 mins after my return to the table we flagged a waitress and ordered the 3 courses, requesting that the first of the matching wines be brought now rather than with the food. When they arrived 20 mins later, our tongues were hanging out. Interestingly we received 2 sets of amuse bouche, either in error or to fill in the delays. 50 mins after ordering, our (no-cook) entrees hadn’t appeared even though the couple next to us had their received their mains, so I raised the alarm. 5mins later the manager appeared, she did apologise for the delay, we got the first ‘we’ve been smashed this weekend with 300 guests” speech and told the kitchen was now working on the entrees. OK, apology accepted but why can’t you just admit the kitchen had clearly lost our order. She also offered complimentary glasses of wine which was appreciated as by now we’d drunk the wine which was meant to go with the food - which finally showed up 10 mins later. Except in place of the pickled pomegranate there was pickled red cabbage, hardly the same. There was no mention of this when ordering or when the dish was served. Did they hope I wouldn’t notice? I get that food runs out but TELL people! When queried, there were no apologies for the substitution, no apologies for the subterfuge (which was more the issue), just the ‘smashed’ excuse and the size of the garden and being late in the day (sorry? a 1pm booking is late?) and blah, blah. Oh, and no price reduction even though they were substituting a significantly cheaper product. Otherwise the food and wine were enjoyable and I thought we were back on track until the mains arrived and hello, these are Moreton Bay Bugs, not lobster ! Well apparently so. Read the full description on the menu carefully and it does say (BUG) after AUSTRALIAN BAY LOBSTER. But seriously, why not just say Moreton Bay Bug on the menu? That’s what everyone else calls them! By now it was 3pm and we’d had enough. We cancelled dessert and paid our bill but we couldn’t get anyone interested when it came to expressing our disappointment and listing the litany of errors. The poor bloke at the till clearly wasn’t buying into it because all he had to say was “yes”, “yes”, “yes” and “smashed” which just added to our frustration and dissatisfaction. Why can’t businesses, restaurants in particular, own it and just say sorry instead of making (up) excuses? If Mavis’s had tried to, I would not have had to post this review. How and why did they allow themselves to get ‘smashed’ when they knew their bookings and could control the number of walk ins? Greed. And you know what? Forget the excuses! I don’t care what your problems are, as a paying customer I expect you to deliver full service and a pleasurable experience. So I’ll say it if you won’t - Sorry Mavis’s,...
Read moreMy husband and I got married at Mavis's in November 2018; I had been there before for an aunt's birthday and loved the beautiful Queenslander, gardens, atmosphere, and food.
When we got engaged it was my first choice right away. We met with Peter and he took the time to go through everything with us and didn't make us feel pressured make a decision right away - something we had experienced looking at other venues. When we made the choice to go with Mavis's - Peter, Charlie and the rest of the staff made us feel so relaxed and confident that everything was going turn out just like we had hoped. They did not disappoint. I was very stressed in the few days before the wedding and every time I called up or asked a question it was no big deal - they had it under control and any change was calmly put into place.
The day itself was beyond perfect, the staff made sure we and our guests had the best time and I did not have to think about anything other than getting married and enjoying the day. We loved having options for where to have the ceremony and as we had so many guests (154) we had the reception in the barn. It looked so magical and warm. Every guest I talked to loved the venue, the food, and how great the staff were. I have already had guests say they have recommended Mavis's to their engaged friends because they love our wedding so much. I had multiple guests say it was the best wedding food they had ever had and they loved the idea of shared platters. My dad had the vegetarian option and loved it as well.
Honestly we cannot recommend Mavis's enough. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, they are easygoing but still professional and we felt comfortable leaving everything in their capable hands. If you are debating about where to have a rustic/country wedding do not even hesitate to book Mavis's it is worth every cent. We look forward to coming back for lunches and to relive the...
Read moreMy wife and I stayed in the Log Cabin for 3 nights with our 2 cats. Overall we were very disappointed given various reviews and the description of the property.
Rustic is ok but it must be good rustic. In our opinion it was not.
However you may enjoy it if you like: a non flush "composting" toilet. Basically a seat with a hole that goes down for processing. This is described as eco friendly but we could not deal with it. It looked to be an old model. We live rural and have a regular flushing cistern that uses water which is recycled. This one was a step back in time for us and real surprise. a step up of about 35cm to said toilet area. With bad knees I found it very hard to get down. Older people would find some problem too a queen bed that has a pronounced dip in the left side sliding doors to the deck hard to operate (1 was almost impossible to close). Neither had locks a good fan above the bed but needing a good clean chairs on the rear deck being very uncomfortable a table that has the end piece broken off (found it down beside the deck) decking that has not seen TLC for a long while noise from cars and trucks from the steep mountain road about 20 meters away other cabins being not far away, voices being easily heard no BBQ
The guest book showed lots of happy people but then again there were only a couple of entries per month or so. On the plus side there was a comfy lounge, nice fridge, old but efficient cooker, good water, plenty of pillows and bed covers. Apart from the fan and wall ledges, it was very clean.
In our opinion this cabin needs a real freshen & revitalisation to justify the rates being asked.
We obviously will not be back and I don't think we would be welcome anyway as this feedback was given on site. We did get a response but nothing came of it, not even a site visit from...
