If I had to rate this hotel, I would give it a 2 out of 10. One point is for the excellent public areas, which are lovely with nice seating areas, a coffee station, a well-kept garden, and inviting communal spaces that are pleasant to spend time in. Another point goes to the good and varied breakfast. Although there were no changes in the dishes over our eight-day stay, the variety, freshness, and taste were well above average, and for that, the hotel deserves some credit.
Now for the more challenging aspects of the hotel. First, the rooms are very basic—at a hostel level. There’s a bed, a small wardrobe, a kitchenette, and that’s about it. It feels like they’ve cut corners on the guest experience. While there was complimentary bottled water in the room on the first day, it was never renewed as expected. There were also no supplies for making coffee (even though there is a kettle), and since you’re not allowed to take coffee from the lobby’s coffee station, if you want to have a cup in your room (as I like to do in the morning), you have to buy coffee, sugar, milk, etc., on your own. Additionally, although we came with a baby stroller, there was no elevator to our floor, and no assistance was offered with carrying our things.
The wardrobe is very small for a family room, and there is no dresser or chest of drawers, so we had to live out of our suitcases. Additionally, there were several issues with the room: the balcony chair was broken, the safe didn’t work (not a huge issue for us, but still), and worst of all, the fan didn’t blow air. We stayed in mid-August, on the top floor, and it was incredibly hot, yet the fan simply didn’t work (I’ve seen this is a recurring theme in many reviews). We don’t expect air conditioning, but at a minimum, provide a ceiling fan or a strong fan so guests aren’t roasting in August. It took two very hot nights, waking up drenched in sweat, before we insisted on getting a replacement fan. To their credit, after we pushed for it, they provided a stronger fan that significantly improved the situation.
The next point is the cleanliness of the rooms, or lack thereof. If you can call it cleaning at all, it was more like "rearranging the blankets on the bed." The cleaning was very superficial; there were hairs left in the room. When the toilet paper ran out (after several days), it wasn’t replaced, and the sheets were only changed after we specifically requested it. Forget about washing any dishes. On one of the days, when we returned sweaty from a trek, we found that our towels had been replaced with small hand towels, and we didn’t have any standard-sized towels to dry off with. Their explanation was that they were short-staffed or something like that, but frankly, in a supposedly upscale boutique hotel, the basic standards for cleaning and maintaining a room were not followed. Guests should not have to beg for fresh linens, toilet paper, unbroken furniture, towels, or a functioning fan.
As for the service, it was generally good in the dining room, but at the reception, it was quite rude and unfriendly to the point where we gave up and didn’t bother mentioning issues to avoid the sour and annoyed faces. Additionally, the reception usually closes after 20:00, and there’s no one to reach out to if a problem occurs. It’s expected for a hotel to maintain some presence 24/7.
In summary, the hotel is beautiful, the seating areas are great, and the breakfast is good. If you don’t mind staying in a very basic and poorly maintained room and don’t plan to visit during the peak summer season, this hotel might suit you. We, however, will not...
Read moreWe stayed for 4 nights in late April/early May. Our honest opinion is there is much to be very happy with ....but, there are a few things which prevented our stay from being excellent. The location is perfect if you want to explore Salzburg and the surrounding area. Parking is easily available and we also made use of the local bus service to get into Salzburg, using the app and buying a 24 hour card. The bus stop is a short walk away. The hotel has been designed to an exceptionally high modern standard. The finish, the furnishings, the decoration, the cleanliness - it's all very good indeed. There are other special touches, including access to hot drinks throughout the day from a good coffee machine. This was appreciated. Our room was a small double, finished to an excellent standard. Clean, with large walk in shower. We felt one of our mattresses (two single beds pushed together to make a double) was very uncomfortable, to the point of back ache and not a great night's sleep. We swapped sides part way through our stay to minimise the problem - One mattress was comfortable. One was awful. We were surprised to be woken up by housekeeping entering our room, shortly after 8am one morning. That's a bit early to be wanting to service bedrooms. Almost all of the staff we interacted with were friendly although we can't say everyone was, especially when they were busy. The breakfast staff were less friendly. Breakfast was a mixed, inconsistent experience. On the best days there was lots of choice and good quality items. On a couple of days, some items weren't replaced or topped up quickly enough - eg) croissants, eggs. One morning, we waited for a table for almost 25 minutes, with no acknowledgement from the staff and no queue. Other guests even jumped ahead of us to grab a table. That wasn't good, at all. The next couple of days we chose to have breakfast much earlier, which solved that problem. On check in, we were given a map of local restaurants, all a short drive away. We did go to a local pizzeria, which was acceptable. It's such a shame that there are no restaurant or bar facilities at the hotel, which would have made all of the difference for us. We would have really liked to enjoy an evening meal or even just drinks, at the hotel, after a busy day sightseeing. Our feedback is given with sincerity and is not a complaint. The hotel is beautiful and we would return. There are just some tweaks which would have made our...
