Gasthof Engelhof — Hotel in Gmunden

Could not sleep because the room was reeking with cigarette smoke and other unpleasant odors. The hotel was fully booked, so there was nothing they could do about the smell. They gave me a Febreeze to spray the curtains, I bought a room freshener from the local supermarket, and also kept the windows and door open all day and night to try to get rid of the smell. Didn't work. Slept in fits and starts for a few hours as the odors wafted and shifted. Mosquitos came in. The benefit of all this was an early sunrise bicycle ride around Traunsee. Eventually, I hauled the mattress to a different room to sleep on the floor with a friend. Each morning (around 8-8:30), the housekeeping staff would knock and promptly unlock our rooms to see if we're away. We were not, of course, and that was quite startling. They also forgot to provide my room with towels the first night and took them away the second day, when I slept in a different room.

Restaurant was fantastic, though, and is clearly where the soul and heart of the establishment lies. We had the best food/breakfast/lunch/dinner here and the kitchen and service staff were genuine, humorous, and accommodating. This type of care and accommodation just didn't extend to the...

If you are planning the relaxing vacation this is definitely Not your place! I will start from the beginning: Check In takes place at 17:30 PM. Even if you mail them before to ask for the possibility to come earlier nobody will react on your request. Check out is already at 10 AM. That means you pay for half a day stay!

The rooms are clean!! Our room was with the main road view, so there was no chance to sleep all night long because of the terrible noise coming from outside. At 7AM we already woke up from the vacuum cleaner noise and about 8:30 the room service girl already knocked our door trying to clean the room after us as soon as possible! By the breakfast at 9:30 the were just few slices of cheese and ham remaining. Nobody asked us if they can bring us may be something more to eat, the stuff was already busy preparing the restaurant for the lunch.

Update 24.2.2025: Positiv: Das Essen war wie gewohnt exzellent!

Negativ: Leider muss ich dem Restaurant einen Stern abziehen: Beim Eintritt ins Lokal wurden wir vom Kellner kurzerhand ignoriert, dreimal haben wir von uns aus Getränke nachgeordert, der Kellner hat die Nebentische gesäubert, aber uns (immerhin 6 Personen) keine Aufmerksamkeit mehr geschenkt. Eine weibliche Servierkraft war schon beim Aperitif leicht überfordert und eine zweite konnte nicht einmal annähernd zu den angebotenen Weinen Auskunft geben (Kommentar ihrerseits: sie trinkt keinen Alkohol).

Tipp: Empfehlung an den Wirt/die Wirtin: Mitarbeiter sollten hinsichtlich Speisen und Getränke gebrieft werden! Als Verkäufer muss ich meine Produkte kennen! Nur dann bin ich erfolgreich und auch motiviert und werde sie auch aktiv anbieten. In unserem Fall blieb der Getränkeumsatz dadurch eher bescheiden.

März 2024: Kurz vor dem Aufenthalt telefonisch einen Tisch reserviert. Empfang war sehr herzlich und ein super Tisch im Restaurant wurde zugewiesen. Der Herr Ober (das ist wirklich noch einer!) hat uns nicht nur bestens bedient, sondern uns auch köstlich unterhalten. Wir haben selten so gelacht!
