So my family first came to Gasteig in the late 1980’s, I was a young, young girl then, but the memories of the years spent skiing there remained with me. We’ve kept tabs on the Lackner family over the years, last year my sister and her husband honeymooned there, and this year me and my son (5) spent 2 weeks skiing. To be honest the snow came late, very late this year and was terrible skiing for me, but my son had an amazing time, was actually perfect conditions to learn in, no lines, few people (Kirchdorf Ski Total needs a shout out, they have amazing instructors), he had a blast and that’s what was important. ||With that said the Lackners couldn’t control the snow, but they could provide great value for the money spent, amazing food, good traditional Austrian charm. We were warmly greeted by Frau Lackner, she looks the same as I remember her from 30 years ago, those good Austrian genes. Her husband Herr Lackner, always has a smile on his face, and can be seen operating the snow moving machinery, it finally poured snow our last three days, almost 3 feet in three days. Neither of the parents speak much English, but their daughters do, Julia (Yul-ya) runs the dining room like a pro, and is always so happy, she is also an amazing crochet’er, just ask her to show you her blanket, socks, etc… The younger daughter is still in school I think, but can be seen pitching in. ||We opted for the ¾ board option, meaning, breakfast, a lite lunch, tea/sweets, and full 3-6 course dinner served every night. They have a basic kids menu, however my son eats like a grown man, and often ordered the fish, steak, or pork they had on the main menu, they didn’t bat an eye, and would even feed him seconds if he wanted more. Since he’s 5 he basically gets free room and board (yes all the food he can eat), and I think they offer this up to 10 years old, and after a full day of skiing, he could eat a lot; An amazing deal, especially for big eaters like mine. The food is mostly traditional Austrian fare, with some fried chicken and terrines thrown in. The fish is freshly caught, and much of the venison is from the hotel hunts. They smoke their own meats/sausages, and offer fresh local cheeses. I often found myself unable to eat everything, and would often ask for half portions. ||Once a week they host a social in the bar area for all the hotel guests to meet each other, which is very nice, the champagne is delicious. Additionally once a week they have a dinner in the barn out back, with a local Tirolian band, this is so much fun, and gets everyone singing, one can’t help but join in. ||Since the skiing was terrible this year, I opted to enjoy the Spa facilities. Karin was amazing, my only complaint is that the massages need to be longer than 50 minutes, lol. She is a master at her craft, and I was in well oiled order for most of my visit. Prices are so reasonable, it’s hard not to splurge. ||Kitzbuhl is the nearest large town 20-30 minute drive, and is much more cosmopolitan, Louis Vuitton stores, and the like. Closer is St. Johann, a good sized town, with a variety of restaurants. Down the hill from Gasteig is Kirchdorf in Tirol, literally an 8 minute drive from the hotel to the Kirchdorf Ski School staging area. There isn’t much in Kirchdorf, however next to the ski school is a bus that will take better skiers to Steinplatte or even Kitzbuhl. ||Overall a great visit, well worth the money. Not many westerners visit the hotel, we were the only native English speakers during our two weeks, the Lackners may prefer to keep it this way, but I have to let the secret out, they run an amazing establishment. The summer looks just as great with a natural swimming pool, kids clubs, dinosaurs parks, hikes, hunting, we plan to be back with more...
Read moreWe stayed in the Gasteiger Jagdschlössl for 4 nights in December for a pre Christmas winter break. The hotel is well designed with an old Austrian hunting Lodge feel despite being relatively modern. The hotel was beautifully decorated for Christmas with unique homemade decorations. Our room was an "Oriel" which was very spacious, spotlessly clean with a Balcony and Bay / Turret area with lovely views. The beds were comfortable, however the "double" was two singles pushed together with the inevitable ridge down the middle. The bathroom was well appointed and modern. The toiletries pack was, however, very limited and was not replenished daily. Surprisingly there was no minibar in the room and the TV was an old CRT type with no English language channels or satellite. There was free Wi Fi in the room though.||||We booked a half board "advent" package which was very good value. The restaurant was very nice, we usually ate at a table with views over the garden. Breakfast was extensive and delicious. The dinners were typically Austrian and 5 courses, the quality was good but nothing special. It snowed heavily whilst we were there and the staff did a good job of keeping the walkways and garden paths clear which made it really enjoyable to walk in the garden in a winter wonderland. We booked an Avent package which was supposed to have candlelit walks and special tastings of local produce. We were not really given the opportunity to partake of these since to a large extent we were left to our own devices and not told when things were taking place. This could have been because we were the only non Austrian guests but it was a bit disappointing. We did however book a massage which was very good.||||One big gripe, however, is that the hotel did not accept Credit Cards. They did take Austrian / German debit cards but this system is not compatible with other European debit cards. Hence I had to carry a big wad of cash to pay the bill. For a hotel advertised as an International 4 star this is very strange, although I suspect they get very few non German / Austrian guests.||||Overall a lovely hotel which was great value for money in a truly terrific location. It just needed a few finishing touches to make it really special, however, I would readily recommend the Gasteiger Jagdschlössl for a great...
Read moreStayed for the second time. This time we tried out the 4 nights 3/4 board arrangements including three days lift pass that can be used in all surrounding ski area among so called "Schnee Winkel ". Everything was coordinated professionally and uncomplicated. They serve one dinner in the separated Tirol style chalet and the local musician plays the regional traditional music that is quite nice. Breakfast and meals are tasty, the sweets served in the afternoon as well as the dessert at diner could be a bit better. However in total very reasonable fair price, only 103€ p.p per night...
