We stayed here on a Leger holiday. This is a family run hotel and very traditional. My first thoughts on entering the hotel was how spotlessly clean it was and that extended from front of house to the rooms themselves. ||||Our room was a little dated and did have only one usable plug to charge phones etc. The TV was very up to date but only showed local channels (we did quite enjoy Midsomer Murders translated into the local language). We weren't able to get any English channels on the TV though. There was a safe which is always a huge bonus and plenty of room to store clothes/suitcases. Our room also had a newly refurbished bathroom with an excellent shower.....nothing like the bathroom photos on Trip Advisor which are probably quite dated now. I don't know though if all rooms have had updated bathrooms.||||Part of our package was breakfast and evening meal. This was typical Austrian Food. Breakfast consisted of choice of cereal/fruit/meats/cheese and bread/ preserves. All freshly prepared, the rolls were still warm. We ordered our evening meal at breakfast and I think maybe sometimes the menu was lost in translation. Typically an evening meal is four courses, salad, soup, main course and a pudding. One night it was Turkey cooked in Egg which I passed on but that turned out to be a Turkey Steak cooked in batter which my OH really enjoyed. In all fairness the food is typically Austrian, not catered specifically to the British taste but it was also really nice. If you are finicky about your food you may find it is not to your taste but if you are open minded then you will find (even though the menu is a little unclear translated to English) that the food here is really good. We were not disappointed and have even come home with a few new recipe ideas to try for ourselves.||||We only had one problem on one night. Our room was at the front of the hotel, opposite our room was a nightclub. On Wednesday night the nightclub was in full swing and the noise went on until 4.00am in the morning. Also outside our window when we looked out at night due to the noise we could see youths urinating in a passageway opposite. A big let down for what is essentially a very quiet town, we did not see any police managing this situation. Obviously this was not under the control of the hotel.....luckily I always travel with ear plugs and for this one night only they were definately needed.||||St Georgen itself is a very quiet town, we were not there during the day to comment how busy it was but certainly in the evening it was quiet on most nights (except for a Wednesday). There are a few bars and restaurants but we didn't try them out as we were eating at the hotel. Some of our party also caught the train from St Georgen to Lake Attergau and then a boat trip on the lake. We didn't do that as we were booked onto excursions but it does sound like an alternative if you are staying here. I think it is fair to say that this feels a very safe town which is why it was a little disappointing to witness the bad behaviour of some young people on a Wednesday night. I think maybe there should have been more police presence there controlling the situation. ||||All in all a lovely stay. I would recommend the hotel and it is a very good base for exploring the Austrian Lakes and also about an hours drive...
Read moreThe hotel is a traditional hotel in a good location. It was a very long journey, very tiring and boring. The rooms were large with a comfortable bed and a very nice shower room with underfloor heating. The bathroom could however benefit from some hooks and shelving for clothes and toiletries. There were virtually no English channels on the tv.|The breakfasts were typical continental with boiled eggs being the only hot choice but there was plenty of choice of ham, cheese and bread. The evening meals varied from OK to poor. The best course was the salad which was very nice. The puddings were mostly a variety of dry sponge type cakes. The vegetarian options were limited. The Christmas Eve typical Austrian meal was horrible a watery pork curry with pasta or a roasted dry chicken leg with a tablespoon of veg rice. Christmas Day was better with a lump of turkey, not sure it was carved from a breast, croquette potatoes and some veg. The drinks were expensive but the bar staff and waitresses were very nice and friendly. The hotel did have some decorations but the place did lack a friendly Christmas atmosphere and there was no music or entertainment even on Christmas day. The only real issue was the noise from the in house disco and the music bar across the road that sprung into life late evening and sometimes went on till past 3am!|The weather did not help with the trips. Hallstatt is a nice place but very touristy and crowded and that with another stop at a small pretty shopping town was not pleasant on a wet cold day. So much so we gave the next day lake trip a miss and spent a nice relaxing day in town visiting the beautiful church and graveyard and enjoying some tasty Austrian food in the local coffee shop/restaurant.|Would we recommend this place for a festive break? No. Having spent several Christmas breaks in Germany and Austria this was the least enjoyable and the majority of other people on the coach...
Read moreThe view shown here is from the back of the hotel. This hotel has rooms on the main street from where you hear the church bells every morning at 6am. On Saturdays there is a terrible racket when the nightclub opposite and the hotel's own nightclub exits between 2-3.30am in the morning. This can be heard from other rooms. Lots of shouting and shrieking in the streets. I had a single room for which I paid a supplement and it was obvious on arrival that the room needed updating. I had to ask for the mattress to be changed as old springs? were digging in me on the first night. This was replaced by a mattress so hard I thought I was sleeping on a board. After that they put a foam mattress on top of the original one. It was the worst room I have ever stayed in whilst holidaying in Europe. The breakfast is ok but hardly anything to write home about. The evening meals were basic and obviously made very economically. Not worth the price charged. Would not recommend. If you do have to stay there insist on a room at the...
