Our family of five traveled three weeks through Belize in July/Aug 2022 and our 2 night stay with Matthew and his family was definitely the highlight of our holiday. If you are looking for a stay with a relaxed Maya family but also want to have a jungle expierence, this is it. The Maya Laguna Lodge is situated on a hill top and has arguably the best view in Belize, overlooking the jungle and Maya Mountains. I could not get enough of the view. The lodge is situated on the hill top on an open gras field, so you are not much bothered by mosquitos. After dark the fireflies put on the next show and if you are lucky the howler monkeys will give a mysterious concert in the night. Matthew's family can provide three meals per day and will let you experience what they eat themselves. From what we could observe, most of it is grown or collected from their own farm or jungle. For the birders: Matthew is an excellent birder. The members of this Maya family are proud Mayans who were, as we perceived it, happy to share their culture with us. Oh yeah there is also a nice jungle creek with a beautiful little cascade where you can get refreshed.
The lodge is situated at the end of a dirt road, you can't penetrate the jungle any further at this point. The last kilometer or so of the road is not very good, but we managed to get there with a regular car. But, I think, pickups from the laguna junction or a little further down the dirt road or probably possible if you ask Matthew. The family has a pickup truck.
I you are used to e.g. European standards for e.g. bathroom facilities, expect the facilities and bed to be basic. For me that added to the experience. You could almost label stays in the lodge as 'off the grid'. (Obviously, electronic paymentd are not (yet) possible)
I'm really glad we stayed here for two nights. I hope you will someday get this...
Read moremy partner and i stayed at Laguna Maya Lodge for one night while traveling around Belize. It was our first visit to Belize in general and we were not disappointed. |What the Laguna Maya Lodge has to offer is not like most lodges around, it is unique in its own off the grid kind of way. getting there is only a small part of the whole experience. While you will need high clearance vehicle to get there, Mr Sackul will meet you at the hard road. Once you arrive at the Sackul's home you will be greeted with lush tropicals all around and the most breathtaking mountain views!! the "hotel" is just what you would expect for a true "mayan living experience". we opted to pitch our tent out front to catch the cool breeze and the night skies. while expecting to hear howler monkey's we did not expect to be so close. We were awakened to the beautiful sounds of howler monkey's of the jungle, they felt so close we expected them to be right outside of the tent!!! Being so far of the beaten path the views of the stars are incredible at night and the Mayan Mountains by day. If you have a desire to find a remote place of solitude to unwind while having full cell service. The accommodations are simple but satisfactory in every way. Mrs. Sackul cooks true mayan home cooking and while we only had one evening meal with the family, it was a very refreshing experience. Vincent offers guided tours and other educational activities perfect for children to adults. we will sure to be...
Read moreThis place is a perfect spot to stay. You have a magnificant view on the jungle and the mountains. It is quiet, lots of animals. At night you can see a field full with fireflies and a sky full of stars. You can hear the howler monkeys at night and see and hear beautiful birds in the morning with Matthew, who is a very knowledgeable birdguide. With his father we walked through the jungle and visited a small cave with bats and an amazingly big spider... We learned and experienced Maya culture and nature! The food was very nice and their kids were around to play volleyball with our teenagers. Don't miss the beautiful waterfall cascade to cool down (at walking distance). Definately a place you...
