Plaza Pueblo Hotel — Hotel in Vallegrande

Vallegrande (the start/finish of the ‘Ché Guevara Trail’) is not exactly over-endowed with hotels. The hotel into which we were initially booked was closed because the proprietress had been suddenly taken into hospital in Santa Cruz. Our driver and guide found another hotel for all of us, but the accommodation was poor and it was very noisy. We moved to the Hotel Plaza Pueblo, a ‘motel’ in the US style. Again the accommodation was poor but the hotel was at least quiet.||The dimly-lit room was small and cramped, and the bed was not especially comfortable. The bathroom was essentially a primitive wet room. At least the water in the shower was warm, though I would not vouch for the safety of the electric water heating system. We stayed more out of exigency and need than out of desire. Breakfast was not particularly good (no hot food), but at least it was provided on time with good coffee.||We stayed in a total of twelve hotels on our visit to Bolivia, and we placed Hotel Plaza Pueblo at number 11 out of these 12. We are both relatively ‘hardened’ travellers and we do not expect hotels to be necessarily luxurious especially in out-of-the-way places such as Vallegrande. However, the town has quite a lost to offer – a pleasant square and church with the highest steeple in Bolivia, an interesting museum dedicated to Ché Guevara, and the highlight – the mausoleum where Guevara’s remains (and those of other fighters) were uncovered in 1997. There is also a second site where other fighters were interred. I found the place quite fascinating.
