My wife and I enjoyed a magical 3 night stay at the beautifully positioned Saguni Safari Lodge in Moremi East/Khwai earlier this month, beginning what was a 14 night safari in Botswana overall with our time split between 4 camps in total. We chose to take our first trip to Botswana during their low season, which comes with its challenges but also with benefits such as the fact we happened to be the only guests in camp throughout our stay, which was as welcomed as it was unexpected and an anomaly serving to enhance our holistic experience at Saguni further. ||In essence, from our arrival to our departure we had the whole camp to ourselves, including private game viewing activities throughout with timings/routes tailored to our own preferences. Similarly our daily itinerary was made flexible by Oscar, our lovely camp manager, who gave us the autonomy and freedom to choose to e.g. either dine privately or, as we often did, elect to dine with the Saguni staff, all of whom were a pleasure to get to know and befriend on a meaningful, personal level. |I cannot speak highly enough overall of the staff at Saguni. Oscar and Edna as camp managers could not do enough for us including providing a complimentary upgrade to a River Front tent which was a much appreciated and a classy touch.||These suites are a stunning upgrade and the ideal place to lay your head of an evening and allow yourself to be lulled to sleep by the dulcet tones of hippos frolicking in the Mbudi Lagoon located just a few short meters away from your expansive deck. A welcome ‘in room’ surprise to us was despite the sweltering summer temperatures, the tent at night was cool enough to sleep comfortably in and free enough from bugs to get a good night’s sleep thus feel refreshed for what the following day may bring us. ||The food was also a welcome surprise. Janet the chef, ably assisted by all of the wonderful ladies who made up Saguni’s wider service staff kept us suitably fed and watered at all times, serving well mixed drinks and hearty, home cooked meals full of flavour and fresh ingredients.||Our star of the show certainly in terms of the safari experience at Saguni was Action, our indomitable guide throughout the duration of our 3 night stay and a gentleman who was so easy to get along with and yet as clearly intelligent and knowledgeable as he was personable. ||Even as seasoned safari goers the setting of the unfenced Saguni Safari Lodge is a hard one to beat with it being located in a quieter section of Khwai, close to Moremi North Gate yet having the perennial Mbudi lagoon flowing directly past the lodge as the consistent life source to an abundance of both resident and migrant wildlife. This feature resulted in an abundance of birdlife and general game consistently passing through camp for a drink including Hippo, Buffalo, Giraffe and of course Elephants. I can only imagine how immersive the ‘in camp’ wildlife experience must be amplified further during the dry season. We even chose to combine an afternoon game drive with a serene Mokoro trip down the lagoon channel skirting past the lodge before stopping downstream to obverse from the water the entertaining shenanigans of the noisy inhabitants at Hippo Pools. ||The square footage and footprint of Saguni is generous and the layout well designed in providing a tangible feeling of space and openness to its public areas, including their stunning boma/fire pit setting and attention grabbing poolside vista. Equally the tents are tastefully positioned to evoke a sense of true privacy and solitude for guests to enjoy when in and around your accommodation. ||I am delighted we chose Saguni as our introduction to a Botswana safari. We may have lucked out in having a private in camp experience and also gotten somewhat fortunate with our spectacular weather and consistent wildlife sightings at a time of year perceived to be challenging in both respects within Khwai and the wider Okavango Delta. However, I can only speak to our personal experience at Saguni which over 3 nights was better than most short stay safari experiences we have enjoyed in over 20 safari taken within Southern Africa. ||I would wholeheartedly recommend Saguni and the indescribably beautiful Khwai area to likeminded friends/family and to anyone seeking a down to earth but immersive wildlife experience, even in low season. We would love to stay at Saguni again and hope to re-visit as return guests in the years to come. We would come again at the same time of year but perhaps we would also look to experience the contrast of staying at Saguni during the prime months of the...

Read moreThe setting is spectacular -- abundant wildlife viewing at the lodge itself -- and of course, on your game drives in high season. Amazing guide in Obert, who added to the experience not just with his wealth of wildlife knowledge and tracking abilities, but also with his willingness to share some personal Botswana culture. Our time here slightly marred due to miscommunication by both our booking agent and the lodge's own upper management, who gave us incorrect information on certain room amenities necessary for handling a medical issue. The lodge's staff itself was very accommodating and did their best to compensate for those discrepancies and inaccuracies, and we still had an overall memorable time. For over a month after our return, the lodge's website still contained some inaccurate info, but it seems they're working on the problem -- the website is not available as of this writing -- as well as on the wi-fi. (There was none in the room as of 8/2025.) Think travelers should also know the rooms are quite rustic, with only a screen door separating the bathroom, the top half of which is open to the outside. Though it's cold on an August night, it's lovely to see the moon from your bathroom. Unfortunately you could also see through part of that screen door, which wasn't great for a family. Finally, someone here mentioned hot water bottles, which we didn't get and definitely would have appreciated. (There's no heat.) Even so, being in the Delta was spectacular, the wildlife simply amazing. Wonderful, also, to sit at the fire pit after dinner and look at the southern sky, listening to the hippos and other wildlife communing with...
