Xugana Island Lodge — Hotel in Xugana Island

Just after a short 25minute flight, we arrived at the Xugana Airstrip where our guide Kaiser and his boat awaited us. The drive towards our 2N stay is through Reed and Papyrus channels, which if you have not been to the Delta before, will bring you to tears of joy within the first 10 seconds. Just when the boat leaves the channel and the open lagoon approaches, you can see the stunning Camp nestled under the large trees on the Island ahead. Newly renovated Xugana combines a natural look of a Delta camp combined with a modern touch, but not too modern to lose its character. It has a well-equipped Curio-Shop, where I found many souvenirs at. Beautiful beaded leatherbelts, hats and bracelets, all nicely presented. |Chef Sparta and his team are on top of their game, while serving the guests with that Botswana charm. After the first meal, you will understand that you simultaneously booked an eating safari as well. |Xugana is a water-based Camp, which we experienced by boat or foot…. Massive birdlife, Elephants, the resident crocs and hippos, and to our joy, we got to see the rare Sitatunga twice. |The fishing equipment is never too far out of reach and the Mokoros give that true Delta experience. Promise is a fine and elegant poler and if you ask him, he will softly sing about the beauty of the Delta for you, while you watch the frogs and waterlilies passing by. |Make sure that when you return from the afternoon activity to head straight for the fire deck. This is the moment with a spectacular view you should not miss, as when the lights go out, the Delta awakens. ||The “magic sauce” however lies within the staff which are the heart of Xugana. They are so naturally skilled on guest experience; we felt at home within 5min putting foot on the island. The passion for their Camp and the care they took of us was so spectacular, that I find it needs a special mention. |There are plenty of water based camps in Botswana, the view and nature are more or less pretty similar to each other….. but the “how” you experience it, with that lasting memory….. that is due to the people who work there and share the passion with you. |And that is why we will return to Xugana on our next...

This is a small but lovely camp & we found most of the staff very helpful & pleasant, but some - especially the dining staff seemed a bit miserable & deflated. ||The camp definitely needs some attention & updating. |Our bedroom floor boards were very creaky & dipped in places - especially the bathroom, the wall outside of our bathroom was severely cracked & when very windy all of the blinds were little protection from the cold, & June is cold for sure! |We could not fault the bed as it was snuggly warm & very comfortably. ||Our biggest gripe which was also very dangerous was the oiled decking. |The first day we arrived we did the formalities, had lunch, settled into our room then off out on an excursion. When we got back us & other guests were slipping & sliding all over the place as they had oiled all the decking, including in the dining room! |The smell whilst eating dinner was wholly unpleasant but the fear of slipping was a big worry as I have had both hips replaced, dislocation is a big risk factor… there was also an elderly couple that were very nervous so we were all taking baby steps. ||The food was always very nice & the excursions with our guides were all brilliant, definitely some wonderful memories we will never forget, so despite the few issues we had, we probably would go back as all the positives outweighed...

Atterrati sulla pista di erba nel mezzo del Delta, la prima impressione sono i babbuini che ci guardano dal lato del campo. Poi troviamo ad accoglierci Lastie, la nostra guida che ci porta con la barca lungo intricati canali al lodge. ||||Il lodge si trova in posizione stupenda, nascosta dagli alberi, su un isola dell’okavango. Sapevamo che non c’è telefono, né internet, né campo per i cellulari …ideale per uno stacco completo (per le emergenze vere esiste tuttavia un contatto radio con Maun). ||||L’accoglienza è calorosa. Il lodge è stato ristrutturato di recente con molto gusto. Dispone di 8 chalet, 2 dei quali si affacciano direttamente sull’ acqua, gli altri sono un po’ nascosti, ma sempre con visuale verso l’acqua. ||||Camera spaziosa con letto comodissimo. Bagno moderno, l’unico ad avere la vetrata, dalla quale si ha una bella vista. Finestre senza vetro fornite di zanzariera (ciò permette che il canto degli uccelli viene percepito benissimo) e bellissima terrazza con pavimento in legno. Non sono previste chiavi. Viene però data una chiave per una piccola cassaforte all’interno dello chalet. Ogni sera ho trovato sul letto un foglio con una storia per la buona notte, una leggenda su un animale africano…gesto bellissimo!||||Colazione, brunch, spuntino del pomeriggio e cena ottime, come nelle altre strutture della Desert & Delta. Sveglia all’alba con thermos di acqua calda per prepararsi un caffè o un the in camera prima della colazione.||||L’area in comune molto bella…onnipresenti gli uccelli, scoiattoli…è venuto a farci visita anche un bel varano...e poi l’ippopotamo che si fa sentire tutte le sere, ma non si vede! ||||Falò acceso tutte le sere…||||Per un giorno e una notte eravamo gli unici ospiti sull’isola…che meraviglia! Devo ammettere che temevo l’attenzione sarebbe stata meno perfetta per 2 persone sole...al contrario! Abbiamo cenato sulla zattera fluttuante, posto previsto per le occasioni speciali…romanticissimo, il falò è stato acceso per noi due …Abbiamo fatto delle lunghe escursioni….||||La sera abbiamo sentito cantare, era domenica e lo staff ha celebrato una messa. Avevo l’impressione che fanno il loro lavoro volentieri. Ogni 2 mesi hanno 12 giorni liberi. Posso immaginare che richieda anche sacrificio perché possono comunicare con le loro famiglie solo tramite lettere.||||Le attività previste sono un escursione col mokoro in acque sicure tra i papiri sui quali si posano piccolissime rane, il safari con la barca a motore ed il safari a piedi. Quest’ultimo mi è piaciuto tantissimo, oltre a vedere si tocca, si odora…si assaggia, p. es. il frutto dell’albero di marola. Un ringraziamento particolare a Lastie e Promise!!! ||||Xugana (si pronuncia Kugana) rimarrà a lungo nei miei ricordi! ||E un posto che fa per chi cerca la natura, la tranquillità…Non vi si trovano tanti grandi predatori, ma le emozioni non mancano…un paradiso ornitologico…Noi abbiamo visto ippopotami, coccodrilli, antilopi, babbuini, facoceri, oltre a tantissimi uccelli…ma la fauna non è mai prevedibile. ||||Grazie Lastie, Promise, Obie, Lydia, Molami, Samantha che ci ha portato fortuna nell’avvistare tanti ippopotami:-), Coca, Eric e...
