A year ago, we wandered into the village of Bojhentsi, near Gabrovo, Bulgaria for lunch. We knew that Bojhentsi was a very old village and that the houses had been beautifully preserved. When we went for a little walk, we stumbled upon the Hadji Velinov Han. There is a restaurant situated in an ancient barn, which is completely open onto a beautiful lawn and garden! Around the garden are several rooms full of typical Bulgarian character. Plus the main house where guests can also stay. As soon as I set eyes on this magical place, in the most stunning settings with views of the nearby hills and forests I knew this was the place to have a party for my husband's 60th birthday! So, a year in advance I booked it up! 22 members of our family came over from England for a week. They stayed with us, nearby hotels, Inns , B&B's and even a rented villa, all in the Old Town in Veliko Tarnovo. On the day of the party we all drove to Bojhentsi (40 mins max) - easy, relaxing drive and arrived around 5pm. A wonderful dinner was prepared for us (that we had pre-ordered), of trout and pork kebabs, lots of Bulgarian delicacies and fresh peaches with ice-cream and liquor for dessert. Dancing, quizzes and lots of merriment followed, a real family affair and made so special as family had travelled from New Zealand and friends from Dubai. We had the whole place to ourselves for the night. The owners went out of their way to make it a special night for Keith and our family and we appreciated that. They even employed a local lady (Ivanka) to take care of any requests we might have (because she has excellent English), and she kindly offered to give us a tour of the village after breakfast, which was another surprise! So I would encourage you to go their for lunch, dinner or even arrange a...

Bozhentsi is a fascinating village of well-preserved houses and public buildings from the time of the Bulgarian Revival. This inn is very charming and has a restaurant. We had a delicious dinner of traditionally prepared lamb and salad served on the balcony overlooking the lovely garden watching the sun set on the nearby hills. In the morning, we had banitsa (Bulgarian savoury cheese pie) with coffee inside the restaurant which was filled with local pottery, pictures and many interesting local artefacts. Our hosts spoke no English which a problem when we first arrived, but they were friendly and attentive to our needs. They organised a personally guided tour for us next day with a lovely English speaking guide. Our room was fine and had a flat screen TV. However, the beds were very hard and the small bathroom flooded when...
