We booked this hotel near the start of the year as part of a trip to Bulgaria to celebrate a 50th birthday. This hotel was specifically chosen so we could have a nice evening meal and a lovely room with great scenery and a good breakfast to wake up to. We also independently confirmed with the hotel to check we could have a vegetarian option at dinner and they even suggested they could provide cake or champagne etc to celebrate the birthday for additional cost. TWO days before we were due to be there (whilst in Bulgaria at another hotel) we received a call to say they were cancelling our hotel as they weren't open! The person who had taken our booking had made a mistake and no longer worked there! No alternative was given so we were left having to find alternative accommodation for ourselves and our two children. We then had to spend a morning looking for last minute availability, not easy given it was August! We did find a guest house several miles away and not as nice as we had planned. We managed to book this with the help of the hotel we were staying at. Not surprisingly we were very disappointed especially as it was such a special occasion and they had had our booking since the 16th January, Six whole months in which to tell us we couldn't stay. Although we had a confirmed booking no apology or compensation was given and we had all the stress and inconvenience of finding an alternative at short notice. Be warned! We did visit Shipka and found the area really interesting so it was very frustrating we weren't able to stay...

The story goes that this used to be the official lodge for all high level communist party members back in the 1980s, when visiting the near by Buzludja monument for their yearly gatherings. The new owners have tried to preserve this high level of quality in terms of materials and comfort. Rooms are spacious and super clean. The view from the balcony roams into the woods. The park surrounding the building is very nice and inviting to lay on the grass and look at the trees. The hotel owners have provided options for walks - well signed in both English and Bulgarian. Of course - Buzludja is a must, at least while it still holds. There is a clean and nice spa area - sauna and steam room. The restaurant is neat - not many vegetarian options, though. We had the sweetest waitress. I really liked the fact that on pictures the hotel looked to us like one of those quite popular and unanimously decorated places. But when visiting, it proved to be a special and with a different vibe one. It mixes socialist glory with humble and hard-working...

Along the beautiful scenic setting in which it is located overlooking beautiful birch trees, it is distinguished by its warm hearted staff. We were greated with welcoming smiles, were given a tour of the lodge, after that had great food there and played a round of chess. I was able to enjoy a nice glass of local red wine, too. ||I highly recommend it. The value for money is unbelievable. The feel is that of an elegant 5* lodge. Many things to discover.
