We stayed at 4 Rivers for 3 days in December 2018. Would highly recommend it!
We'd originally booked the floating lodge but were informed in advance that re-building had not been completed and only the inland "family room" lodges were available (two adjoining rooms, one large bathroom). From what we understand, the refurbished floating lodges will be brought in one by one from Jan 2019.
Regardless, it was a wonderful respite for city dwellers looking to relax and recharge away from the city and amidst nature. The air and river were clean and breath-takingly refreshing. The tents are well-appointed; no air conditioning but the fan (which supposedly had an insect repellant function) was enough to keep the room cool through the days and nights. The restaurant food was good; lunch and dinner were traditional Khmer cuisine with Thai influences.
The staff was courteous and obliging. The resort seems to be very involved in the community, including a nearby primary school where they had an ongoing project to build a new classroom. Our guide Piroom brought us to see fireflies, mangrove kayaking and a beautiful serene sunset spot. He also spoke the best English of all our guides in Cambodia. Unfortunately we didn't get to go trekking during our stay as it had been raining the past 2 weeks and the staff advised against it as trails were swampy and leechy.
We were picked up from our hotel in Siem Reap at 6am. We'd booked a van for 4 of us with our luggages - this was comfortable. Someone from the hotel checked in with us (through the driver's phone) along the way. Including a few stops for coffee, the washroom and lunch, we reached at around 5pm followed by a boat ride (approx. 25 mins) on the Tatai River; a perfect introduction to the beautiful area. We checked out at 12pm, got stuck in some peak hour traffic upon reaching Phnom Penh and reached our hotel...
Read moreWe were completely taken aback by how truly remote this place is! You get as much cultural exposure as you can handle and plenty of pampering! I’d truly suggest taking an excursion, like looking in on the lovely Khmer people’s world- very worthwhile.
I’m extremely impressed by the impact a resort like this can have on a village. In a positive way! Hiring locals to not only work throughout the resort, but buying the locals services :fruits/vegis, liquor , sewing etc … I’m not sure how a village could sustain itself without this full circle. Even encouraging birds etc with calm music /bird song vs loud clubbing music
So few people so you feel everyone knows you and they’re excellent remembering what you like.
Organization is remarkable!
You’re off the grid but not off the grid! Amazing WiFi ! Better than many hotels in cities
So nice - at one point we we getting bit by just a few mosquitos and someone brought out mosquito spray - every need taken care off thoughtfully
Rooms have a Yoga mat Every AM you’d wake to Cookies in banana leaf and Boiling water to make coffee Water to clean feet in before entering porch nice touch The multiple fans in rooms were wonderful The pick up volleyball game was really nice to be part of - transcends cultures Mattress was very comfortable Cold water available everywhere was nice (liked not having plastic bottles!) Attention to detail regarding orchids growing out of coconuts etc was lovely Food had variety and was fresh /delicious We had our young adult children with us and they could have fun!! Not an old persons resort
Staff was really remarkable, always there to help without ever being intrusive and fantastic...
Read moreSuch a beautiful setting, the journey along the river from the reception, which takes approximately 30 minutes, gives you the perfect insight into what Canvas and Orchids Retreat is all about. You really feel like you are miles from anywhere in the middle of nature.|Loved to be able to kayak along the river, and felt very safe despite not being an experienced kayaker. Swimming from the deck of our room was delightful, the water temperature in February was perfect, (not one of those where you inch in because of the cold).|It's great that all the staff are locals, their levels of English speaking can vary, but of course we don't speak their language, shamefully. The food was fine, nothing too fancy, but we didn't expect that in this setting. The cocktails we had were fabulous 👌 |There's no kettle in the room, so a flask of hot water is left on your balcony table early morning so you can make a drink in your room before going for breakfast, milk being provided in your own little fridge. |The shower is in effect a wooden barrel in your tent, most unusual but fitted in perfectly. The only thing we weren't sure about was the layer of loose stones in the hand basin, so you can't actually fill the basin with water and not sure how hygiene this is.|All the staff were friendly and worked really hard, they even provided a fresh packed breakfast of choice for our early check out at 6a.m.|Just a tip, remember to put your mosquito repellent on before going for...
