Baker Creek by Basecamp is a collection of 19 log cabins plus traditional frontier-styled rooms. The property is situated near the intersection of Baker Creek and the Bow River on scenic route 1A. It’s a 15-minute drive to Lake Louise (ski hill, groceries), and 45 minutes from Banff.||This retreat is a beautiful and peaceful setting on a property that historically housed the workers who built Canada’s railroad along the Bow River between Banff and Lake Louise. Even today, a train rumbles along the nearby tracks (light sleepers beware and ask for a room or cabin further from the train tracks) The cabins are decorated in a traditional style - we stayed in cabin 1 that offers a wood stove, a modest kitchenette (with a dishwasher), a small bedroom with a Queen bed, as well as a loft with two I single beds…. It is ideal for a family with two kids as long as they are old enough (8+) to climb a steep ladder to access the loft area. This cabin provides a cozy and renovated bathroom….with premium soaps, shampoos and lotions from the Rocky Mountain Soap Co. (“Rocky”). These natural soaps and lotions are 5-star quality - amazing ! The property has a brand-new gym, as well as both a sauna and a steam room with men’s and women’s lockers/showers - very impressive.||Sadly, the management at this Basecamp property is disorganized and dysfunctional. Two simple requests were totally botched by management: ||1. To clean our room in a 7-hour window (while we skied Lake Louise) between 9am-4pm…. Amazingly, when we returned from skiing (after advising the manager that we were out all day), our room/bed was not made nor the room cleaned (at $400+ per night)… After we returned at 4Pm and said “don’t bother,” they sent the cleaning crew in. This is really basic stuff… they had seven hours to clean!||2. A request to extend our departure by one hour from 11am to 12pm caused a series of miscommunications, two invasions of privacy, and (in the end) a total lack of empathy by the manager. After being advised that our room checkout was approved for a 12pm departure, a member of the cleaning crew showed up at 11:30am to clean - she had not gotten the memo of the 12pm checkout! Incredibly, a 2nd member of this crew showed up at 11:45am (while we were showering and packing), and he asked in an accusatory manner why we had not checked out? He gave an eye-roll when I told him we had been granted a 12pm check out (as if I were lying). We checked out at 11:59AM sharp to avoid added attitude… when I left, I told the manager on duty (January 25) what had happened - she showed very little empathy, did nothing, and never even followed up with an apology.||In summary this is a beautiful property spoiled by a dysfunctional manager and disorganized cleaning crew ——I hesitate to recommend it wholeheartedly — if you book this property, be prepared for sloppy management… Make sure to get any special requests (however...
Read moreI wish I could give five stars. The cabins and place itself is nice. It’s a beautiful location with some great amenities like fire pits and an ice rink. However, I am really beyond disappointed with the customer service. First, when I arrived I was an hour before their late check in of 4PM. I asked the girl at the front desk if I could check in early. This isn’t usually an issue for hotels etc. It was only an hour early after all. The girl at the front asked for my name and looked up my booking. She then told me that, “no, they are still cleaning.” I was shocked that this could be true. Cleaners are usually done early. So I asked if she could let me know if they finished early. Her reply, “we are busy and it’s full, so no.” She was not helpful or friendly in the slightest and I found it odd.
I was parked right in-front of the building I was staying in and would you believe there were NO CLEANERS anywhere around!? She completely lied. I sat in my car only 20 feet from the door of my room and not once did I see cleaners. Five minutes after I went in two girls go into the front desk to check in. And guess what, when they came out a few minutes later they went to their room which was right near mine, and they started unpacking their car. Odd, I thought they were so busy…
I waited 45 minutes before going in again (15 minutes before check in), because by that point I needed to use a washroom. When I went in there was a new woman, and I asked to use the washroom. I also asked if my room was ready yet. The woman who was there that time responded, “what’s your name? I have lots of available rooms.” What an entirely different response from the girl who was there before. And it confirmed what I had suspected, and that the first girl had lied.
I told the woman that the first girl said they were still cleaning and very busy. She apologized but then the guy tried to lie and cover for the first girl who lied. He tried to say that they just called five minutes ago to say it was ready. Again, I never once saw someone from cleaning enter or exit the rooms in the building I was staying in.
Now it is two weeks since my stay and my credit card has not be refunded for the deposit. I have emailed multiple times to be told it’s been released. It has not. And I have called my credit card company to make sure there is nothing preventing the release on their end. There isn’t.
To say I’m annoyed by this resort is an understatement. I left the room in immaculate condition, and even had to leave a day early because of a family emergency. I will never ever ever stay here again, unless they get new owners and management. It’s really disappointing and disrespectful when an establishment’s staff flat out lie to you....
Read moreWe booked baker creek for 2 nights for a short trip to Banff/Lake Louise. We had stayed in the fairmon banff the day before and were disappointed that such an expensive hotel came with little to no percs etc. That is NOT the case with baker creek. We stayed in cabin #34 and couldn't have been happier. We booked on Expedia and got a discount. Specifically booked this cabin for the fireplace and wasn't disappointed. For someone from the states who usually has to pay $5/bundle of firewood at an average campground, it was fantastic to have free firewood available right on your porch. Not only that, but they'll give you multiple little little kindling bundles wrapped in newspaper, and matches. The office has skewers available for free as well for hotdogs/marshmallows. Cabin was very cozy, very clean. Microwave, mini-fridge, instant hot water pot, French press, toaster are there. Firepits by the river with multiple chairs around each. I think we had the best cabin location for the winter because: the river was frozen over and those firepits weren't usable, we were the furthest from the main lodges and from the train tracks so it wasnt as loud and we couldnt see it. Yes, there is a train that comes by quite often, seemed like every hour. However, it never sounds it's horn, and it's white noise. There is a furnace in the cabin. But we rarely used it because of the fireplace. The fireplace also has an internal fan, so either the furnace or the fireplace will cover the train noise. There's a gym in the basement of the main lodge with steam/dry saunas. Didn't seem like anyone was using it except for when we wanted to go to the sauna and it was inevitably overflowing with children. But we had a spa tub in the cabin. Small good items/snacks available in the office for sale. Otherwise there's a decent market in lake louise 15 minutes down the road. Better to stop at IGA in banff on the way. All and all...
