We recently stayed at Canyon Hot Springs Resort hoping for a relaxing, family-friendly long weekend getaway, but unfortunately, we left feeling disappointed and with no plans to return.||While the campground and facilities were clean, that was one of the few positives we experienced. One of our main concerns was how heavily the resort seemed focused on profit, often at the expense of guest experience. The hot springs pool, for example, is not included with your campsite stay—even for guests staying multiple nights. Our family of four (two adults, two children) had to pay $67 each time we used the pool, with no multi-day passes or discounts available for campers.||Another consideration is the train that runs directly behind the campsites. It’s quite loud, and while it didn’t disturb our sleep in a trailer, it’s definitely something tent campers might want to be aware of.||The fire pits were oddly placed on the sites. We had two sites and on the one site, the firepit was directly underneath of a large tree (it could have easily been placed 5 feet farther away and not been under a tree). The second site, the fire pit was placed directly where we needed to park our trailer in order to access the water hook ups, which left the firepit right beside our awning (again, this one could have been 5 feet farther the other way and not been in the way at all). It seemed not very well thought out for a positive camper experience. ||The most concerning part of our stay, however, was the lack of safety communication and preparedness regarding wildlife. A black bear entered our campsite around midnight on our first night. Thankfully, we had secured our food, but the bear was clearly used to human food—tipping over coolers and looking for snacks. We heard similar stories from other guests. When I mentioned this to the owners, hoping they might put up signage or contact conservation, I was met with a dismissive “shake a tin can and make noise—we’re in bear country.” While it’s true this is wilderness, I expected a more proactive approach from management to ensure both guest and animal safety. There were no bear safety reminders, no signage, and no visible effort to educate or support campers in avoiding dangerous encounters.||In addition, amenities that it appears used to be included are now at an extra cost. Showers are blocked off in the main bathroom, and you must pay $4 for 6 minutes using loonies only at the shower facility by the main entrance. The dryer costs $5 per cycle, and the washing machines were out of order during our stay. Firewood was $14 per small bundle, which felt overpriced. We also noticed that although the campground has plenty of green space, there is no playground for children. Instead, there were many signs on trails and open areas saying "no trespassing" or "private property," which limited where kids could explore or play. ||It is interesting that they charge a fee for the campsite and then also charge you an extra fee per person who is staying at the site (including children). ||We’re sharing this review in the hopes that other families can make an informed decision. If you're looking for a peaceful, family-oriented, and welcoming place to camp, this may not be the best fit. The atmosphere was not worth the premium pricing. We had hoped for a better experience and left...
Read moreWe booked over the telephone a Log Cabin for one night, staying on July 8 2017. Although we understood it would be somewhat rustic, we were not prepared for what we got. Upon arrival, we entered the cabin to find a very strong urine smell throughout. These are very small cabins (a couple of bunk beds, a sink and a closet where a toilet is inside) so there is no escaping the strong smell. When we asked at the front desk about the smell, we were advised that its natural cedar. However, we have stayed in cedar built homes before and they did not smell like this. It was very overpowering. You have to bring your own bedding and towels, but we discovered you also have to bring your own soap for use after the toilet. They did not tell us this and their gift shop did not sell disinfectant soap. They tried to sell us body wash instead. There are no showers inside the cabin and we were told to use the public showers attached to the hot springs. These showers are very dirty inside and well used. It should be noted that the hot springs were disappointing too. They smelt like chemicals / chlorine and were very small. The restaurant on site serves limited food; we ordered the pizza for $20 to discover it was a frozen grocery store-bought oven pizza. The cabins are dirty, with bugs inside and cob webs. To be frank, we could have gotten past all this and chalked it up to a rustic experience, until we returned to the cabin to find mouse/rat poop on the bed and mice running around. That was it for us! We packed up our stuff and headed back to the main office to alert management to the situation. The most disappointing part of our experience was the complete lack of customer services. The owner was not the least bit surprised at our complaints, nor did she same to care whatsoever. She offered no alternative and when we asked for a refund she flat out refused. The owner was not even willing to credit us back a portion of the charges. She actually denied that there were mice in the cabins, although her daughter’s face said it all. We told her the two cabins next to us were having the same problems, as the people were complaining and screaming too. The owner simply did not care the least bit. She actually ended the conversation by demanding that we leave as we were bad for business. They charged us the full fee, with no refund or credit, and sent us on our way at 10:00 pm that night. We do a lot of world traveling and in locations that range from five stars to rustic or budget travel. We have been fortunate to experience a lot over the past 20 years and are completely flabbergasted at how we were treated by management at this place and the lack of full disclosure of what we were getting. We recommended driving completely past this horrible “resort” and putting your...
Read moreIt took me a while for me to gather my thoughts about our experience here. If you're wondering why the ratings are all over the place, it's because this place if all over the map. We stayed for a month - it was supposed to be 6 weeks, but we could not stay there any longer! I'm going to give you our experience as FT RVers who have been living this lifestyle for 18months, 2 countries, countless parks, resorts, boondocks and campgrounds. This is not a resort. There are no 'resort' amenities. There are NO amenities here. It is the most expensive place to stay...anywhere! If you have an extra car, it's $20 per night. The location is good to get to a few national parks but there is a train (in all fairness, it is a train part of BC Interior). The train comes a few times an hour and where this place is, the part of the curve...sooo extra loud! The RV camp ground is super packed. You're table is literally right beside the neighbours dumping station. RVs can't have wood fires, even though the tents can. We had to go with our propane fire pit. There are community wood firepits, but they are right beside the train and you have to sit on steel rods Those are not hot springs. Just hot pools. Bathrooms are dirty and very old and gross. Laundry is old, most machines were not working and it's unbelievably expensive Showers cost a lot of money. So if you're a tenter, be ready for an expensive shower in an disgusting bathroom. Agnes, the first person who greets you...is not a nice lady. Eventually she started being nice (it took 27days for that to happen) She loves to say that if you don't like it 'get out'! Any complaints and she tells you to get out. The pools are not included in your stay. They are way overpriced. You also can't bring any drinks or food into the pool area...even if you buy an ice cream from them! There are no Bear protocols in place. There are no bear barrels/boxes at the tent sites. Several times we had to deal with bears wresting to open the garbage. Unless you go to the office, any outages or problems in the area, you won't know anything. Final words, they keep the grass cut and neat and the location to Revelstoke is 30mins away. Stay away from this park. There are so many better places in the area. Be prepared for rudeness, expensive and tons of train screeching. SIDE NOTE: This place is on the market and anyone looking to buy this spot, DON'T. You'll be wasting your money and the RV community has red flagged this place. Money pit for...
