Pros: Great place, quite, the neighbours are far away, love the wood stove, lots of wood and water furnished by the helpful staff, everything you need to cook is available in the cabin, well insulated, clean, fun to live as though you are back at the turn of the 20th century. The cabins are each unique and are built to meet very high standards. The paths in the mature forest cross streams and lend themselves nicely to wildlife sightings (minks, hares, deer...).
Cons: All the inconviences that come with no electricity or running hot water (but you should be willing to accept these in advance), price is a bit on the steep side. Hard to nearly impossible to keep the fire going all night, unless you wake up every 3 to 5 hours (even with a big hardwood log and the vent closed). However, this only means you'll have to restart it in the morning, no big deal.
What I recommend to bring: A little propane stove, slippers for the morning, a head lamp for the toilet at night, a portable radio to break the silence from time to time. Tin foil.
Think camping for your food, keep the cooking simple. Suggestion: bring some tinfoil to wrap up your food and cook it quickly on a bed of dying embers. I cooked two, inch and a half steaks (medium-well done) wrapped in tin foil, cubed potatoes (in tin foil), mushrooms and onions (tin foil) on the embers in less than fifteen minutes. That is at least half the time compared to cooking on the stovetop, not to mention the time saved waiting for space to free up on the 2 foot cubed cooking area. It is a little tricky to turn them, but you can fold the tinfoil to make handles that are surprisingly cool to the touch and use the fire poker to move them around.
Highly recommended, everyone should go at least once, even if your from the Eastern Townships. You will more than likely want to go back to try out some of the other cabins.
Hope this was helpful to everyone interested in staying...
Read moreWe LOVED this place. It’s in a very natural part of the Eastern Townships, QC, with beautiful rolling hills and forests. The property itself is well kept, organized and gorgeous. The staff is courteous and attentive, good natured and friendly. We stayed in ‘Le Hobbit’, a quaint cottage shaped like a hobbit hole with round doors and windows and a turf roof. The place was decently sized for 2, MAYBE 4 people at most. The space is well organized and the kitchen is great. Consider it “glamping”. The beds were comfortable, and the bathroom (dry toilet) in the cabin was clean and NEVER once smelled. They provided all the basics like kindling and wood, candles and toilet paper daily. Plus dish soap and all the kitchen necessities. One complain is the indoor wood stove, although it heated the room well, was a little too small to cook anything on- they do however have an outdoor fire pit and table as well as folding lawn chairs. Very private space with a separate lane and surrounded by woods. Close parking to the cabin itself. The showers were in the main reception, a two minute walk. Unlimited hot water! The shower area itself was a little mouldy but they do appear to clean daily. We really enjoyed the walking trails there but especially the 4km maze. Highly recommend!
About 20-25 minutes from the Mont Orford park, including the mountain. Same with Magog if you needed anything like food. Bring a cooler, there is no power and no fridge.
Overall I’d highly recommend checking some of...
Read moreI can not recommend this enough for anyone looking for a weekend road trip off the grid, especially if you’re a Tolkien fan! ||We spent three days here during the May long weekend and, aside from perhaps the flora and fauna not being at their prettiest, we felt this was the perfect time of year to go. Not to hot, so you could still use the wood stove for heat, boiling water for coffee, etc. Not too cold, so you don’t have to keep waking up in the night to keep the fire going for warmth. And NO BUGS. Definite bonus.||The owners and staff were absolutely lovely and welcoming, making sure we were taken care of. Water and firewood were delivered every day direct to us. The showers in the main building were extremely clean and modern. The Hobbit design was well done, someone did a great job designing and building the place to mimic the feel of the film (and the books).||Oh, and definitely check out the labyrinth, it too is very well designed and a lot of fun!||If anything the only “complaint” I have is that a little extra care could be taken to make the outdoor visuals a little more appealing, eg. there were some leftover 2-by-4’s sitting on the roof of the Hobbit house, which looked a bit odd, and a large row of garbage and recycling bins in full view from the house, which was a bit of an eyesore and disappointing as it took away from the “magic” of being alone in the woods||Other than that, though, it was an exceptional getaway and we would...
