Our hosts graciously accommodated us to stay with them on what we imagine would be the very busiest camping day/weekend ever - CANADA's 150th celebration. Please note - we called our hosts 3 days before booking so the review below needs to take our very short notice of possible arrival at their campground into consideration in order to fully appreciate their generosity towards us. ||||When calling to attempt reserving a spot with them, Camping Cantley let us know, that due to the extremely busy nature of the Canada 150 weekend, that there was a very strong possibility of there being no flexibility for their campground to accommodate us. That said, they ended our phone conversation by extending hope to us by letting us know that they would try hard to work something out so we could stay. ...and work something out, they did. We ended up staying among their seasonal (long term) camping folk and ended up not only having 'some random spot on a lawn/parking lot somewhere' but rather we were set up with a site that had every hook-up and campground amenity we could have hoped for. ||||During our stay, we witnessed our hosts continue to accommodate campers around us. A couple of very good examples of this have to do with how the hosts handled the extreme rain and subsequent water-caused incidences around their campground; gravel trucks were out I think daily (or at least very often) to fill in areas of ground that had become puddles or straight up muck and a tractor was available to assist campers that had used poor judgment (in our opinion) in handling their vehicles/travel trailers over wet and soft ground. ||||Beyond the amazing nature of how our hosts handled the weekend's intensely wet weather and volume of guests, we found the campground to be incredibly peaceful, serenely simple, beautiful, and well-cared for. We simply couldn't have hoped for a better place to stay to help commemorate Canada's 150th birthday. ||||If when you notice the discrepancy between what I am describing and the mediocre rating of the Cantley campground (the rating is 3.5 at the time that I write this), I urge you to consider the possibility that a few negative reviews can wreck an overall rating quickly (when numbers of reviews are relatively small) and that those people who gave poor reviews may actually have contributed more to the negativity they described of their experience than what the campground might held responsible for. ||||One small drawback (but it was not a huge issue given that we were not actually spending copious amounts of time in our travel trailer) was that success with internet access was nil. I did ask our hosts about this glitch and I did understand that the weekend's unusually large volume of campers would greatly affect internet accessibility, however, it did not once connect properly for us over the 4 otherwise amazing days we ended up staying with them.||||Thank you Camping Cantley for having us! We recommend...
Read moreThis is the worst experience that I have ever had camping, and I have been to plenty of campsites. I came with a good friend for one night of catching up and having a bonfire and a few beers. We mistakenly drove into the exit of the campsite, but the receptionist was kind and set us up with our reservation. We weren't told anything about our fire needing to be out by midnight, and neglected to read the fine print on our reservation as it was late afternoon and we were anxious to set up our tent. The evening was going great, we were laughing loudly and enjoying ourselves. Our fire had died down to not much more than embers at this point. All of a sudden, a man with a flashlight appeared out of nowhere and started screaming at us about noise and the fire, and telling us that we had to "go to bed now!!" He claimed to be the owner, and we apologized and said that he hadn't realized that the fire had to be out and that we would keep it down. Although this was the first time he came to us with a noise complaint, he exclaimed "bullshit" and said it was listed on what I had signed. We said that we honesty hadn't realized and he started accusing us of not having paid for our site and that we didn't belong there, despite having the proper identification they required on our dashboard and tent, and told us we should leave. My friend said "excuse me? We certainly have paid and who are you to come over and start screaming at us?" The owner then proceeded to SHOVE my friend's chest, so he shoved the owner back. The owner then fully attacked my friend, they both fell wrestling to the ground and my friend's glasses were knocked off. I was screaming for him to get off my friend and I proceeded to phone the police. The owner apparently did as well after he took off (after the altercation). So the cops came and took our statement, and while speaking with the police another owner (this time female) tried to tell the police that my friend was the attacker. The cops ended up asking her to leave and they would come get their statement after speaking with us. We finishing explaining the story to the police, who said they would be back to touch base after speaking with the owners. When the police came back they said that the male owner admitted that he initiated the altercation. I want my friend to press charges but he is still debating on how to proceed in this matter. Regardless, my friend was angry after being attacked and my small dog and I were scared and shaking. I will ensure to pass this story along to everyone I know, because these owners are DISGUSTING human beings who cleary think attacking their guests is an appropriate way to conduct business. NEVER camp here unless you're looking to be assaulted and have your...
Read moreWe spent 10 days at Cantley because we do have family in Gatineau. I called to reserve probably a month before our arrival. The washroom and showers were kept cleaned all the time. Our site was large enough for us; there are some smaller sites and some larger ones. Staff are friendly and helpful. I find it is a bummer for our guests to leave their cars parked at the visitors parking (outside the gate) but then a lot of campgrounds have this policy.||Since our site was near the pond and yes there was a family of geese in and around the pond, I am assuming they came to our site when it was not occupied or rented....I was very disappointed to notice all the geese's poop on our site as we were installing our camper. It would have been nice if the maintenance would have cleaned the site before we arrived since they knew we were arriving that afternoon. My son and his family (2 small grand-kids were coming for supper that sunday). I wanted to make sure they wouldn't be stepping in it.. Since we left the campground for supper around 4:30pm, I told the lady at the office that we will be back around 9pm, I told her that it would give the maintenance man ample time to clean the site before we got back. She did call maintenance while I was still in the office to explain the situation. Yes, when we got back , everything had been cleaned. This was very much...
