If you can get a campsite, you will be fortunate because this is a very popular spot. It's proximity to Harrison Hot Springs is a 10 minute drive, and if you need something in this that isn't available in this "one street town" then Agassiz is another 10 minutes away where propane, a Mechanic, Supermarket, Drugstore, and select Bakeries and such can be found. The campsite itself is VERY nice, kept well by a small friendly and well informed staff. The sites are nice, a select few with a view of Hicks Lake through some shrubbery, but all are a short walk to the waterside. There are many access points to the water and could be considered excellent vantage points to have a private beach for the day if one was to forfeit going to the campsite private beach or the public beach on the other side of the peninsula which the campsite is located. The hike around the lake is about 2.5 hours and can be done in 2 hours without too much effort. But access to the water beyond the campsite boundaries itself is limited. One thing that we found difficult was the mosquitos, but it could have been the season and/or timing. It has been a wet Spring of 2018 and now that it's starting to warm up, we were happy to have bug spray. Without it, it could have been miserable. Another good and possibly negative thing is the First Come First Serve sites. It's nice that these are available (I think I counted seven sites, which are TENT ONLY sites). If you can get a spot, be prepared for tighter quarters. Imagine the size of a parking space for the tent plus an area for the car. Some of the end-zone sites (4 total) are a bit bigger but these will get occupied first unless you arrive early. Also if you end up in the middle sites, be prepared for little privacy since there are no trees or shrubs to divide you from your neighbor; which also reminds us all to be good neighbors (noise, smoke, and late-night chit-chat, etc) when...
Read moreHicks Lake was our go-to campsite for many years, recently we have found the the maintenance and cleanliness has suffered. Outhouses are not cleaned very well and there was no Sanitizer available in them in our last 2 stays. Campsites were not raked over between campers, as they used to be, picnic tables were left really dirty from previous campers, and generally there's an appearance of neglect throughout the campsite. The reservation system is also a joke, even though the park sign posted as full, there were at least 10 empty sites each night we stayed (Mon - Thurs) during both of our most recent stays. We came up Sept 7th mid-week for a 2 night stay unreserved expecting to be able to use one of these empty sites, there were 12 empty sites very early in the morning of the 7th, and still 8 empty by 7:00 pm, the Park Ranger would not let us occupy any of these because she said they were reserved by someone and they had until 11:00 AM the next day to show up. We would happliy move if anyone showed up, and we would pay for the spot, meaning they would get double the revenue, but we were denied. We were forced to leave, came back the next morning and for sure all of the sites I noted were still empty. Bad system, unoccupied, no- show sites should be available sooner than their current policy allows. We will always come to Hicks Lake for the Lake, it's beautiful and very clean, but the Campsite needs improvement along with the...
Read moreGreat experience, was able to enjoy the tent ⛺ camping. It was the first time in here and it was a hassle. The lake is pretty close and was in walkable distance. As usual like all the provincial parks this one was also little crouded even the weather was not favourable. It was raining 🌧. Because of that we missed going in the lake for activities. There is a good trail 👣 but it is better when not raining. From a point he road to the camp ground has no asphalt. The gravel road is around 4 to 5 km. Also fire wood is there for around 1 bag for 10$ or 3 for 25$. You can ask for it when the camp officer comes to you for check in. They roam frequently. Free parking is only for 1 car 2nd car is charged at 11.5$ per night. As of now the camp gates will not close and you can come little late for check in. If you are reserved your name will be in list or if you do FCFS (First Come First Serve) you can look around the site at at the post number there will be a green tag which says you can use it and also mention how many days it is avalible for. You can drive to any of that and the camp officer will go through the check in process. Please try to have cash 💸 as they told they will not take card. Telus has network coverage but only in 3g and for Rogers it is hard. Happy...
