Ok, this was the find of the trip. After Montreal, we foolishly did not make a reservation for a room in Sudbury ON. I mean, it was Tuesday night, it's a Small mining city in a sparsely populated Provence with over 30 hotels, what could be the risk? Nope every hotel, from the most expensive, to the questionable one on the edge of town, - booked! It was after 9:00, very dark, and we have a map with print so tiny we need a magnifying glass to read the names of the towns. No joke! So do we go backwards to North Bay? I called one hotel there - no vacancy. Do we head toward the border crossing at Sault St. Marie, that's 310 km away. We decide to drive toward the border. Finally a road sign for an upcoming town. Espanola ON ( also, no joke) I called all the lodging in town, including the one with a seriously negative review, no vacancy! On we drive. To keep awake we recall sights from the same drive 4 years ago, we try to remember where the town was that had the great horse sculptures out front of a closed little old motel with colorful doors. We think it was a closed motel, we don't really know, but we remembered the sculpture, and now because of poor planning we are going to miss those sculptures, and the Serpent River Trading Post too Booooo! Finally a new little town! Massey ON. There's a funny little old fashioned motor hotel, the sign says open but there's a lady going into the office. Well maybe there are 2 rooms. I notice she's traveling in a fifth wheel trailer. If she gets the last room I want to ask her if we can pay to sleep In her trailer! As we go in she's leaving, I ask if there's a room, she says she's not sure, she needed an RV hook up,so in we go. We wait a bit and don't know how to get the manager. Finally he comes out, he thought we were with the RV lady. So we get the room. As we go outside I notice the sculpture in the front, and the colorful doors, then the murals on the walls. We've found our motel/town! Next we open our door and find this very clean and loved little room. It's not your Hilton Garden or even an Econolodge, it's not a sterile plain vanilla cookie stamp place, but it is very clean, fixtures and carpets are new, towels very white and still fluffy. There's a little sign asking guests to refrain from using towels to clean there shoes, cars, etc. and directing them to use the rags in "your" closet. I wondered if that was sarcasm referring to the clientele's clothing. But I didn't feel that that could be true because the check in person was so genuine. So I looked in the closet. Sure enough, a hanging mesh bag containing cut up damaged towels, labeled rags. We were also treated to lovely bistro style ceramic mugs with our tea rather than the typical styrofoam coated paper cups we've become accustomed to finding in our rooms. The beds were very comfortable and new as well. Again it didn't look like your standard decor, and it's an old fashioned mom and pop motor hotel but that's the beauty of it. Mom and pop are Anil & Sushma, and they love their hotel and they are lovingly making a go of it in Massey, Ontario Canada. If you are ever up that way spend a night at the Mohawk Motel. An added bonus will be to have a meal across the street at the Bistro, a surprisingly sophisticated and cosmopolitan cafe with an...
Read moreCancelled my reservation without notice and left me out in the cold after dark after a 4hr drive.
I made a reservation for this motel over two months in advance. Website says "pet friendly", but I contacted the owner just in case. He said hotel policy was one dog only. I asked if he would make an exception for my two small dogs (for an extra fee, of course) and he never replied. Emailed again a month later, no reply. My husband and I show up after dark on the reservation day, in -20 degree weather after a long drive, to an empty reception desk. After calling out repeatedly, the very friendly cleaning woman came over and we find out the owner left and just left a note saying our reservation was cancelled and to "definitely not let us stay" (wha?). I understand not wanting our two dogs there, and holding to motel policy, but I don't understand not telling us, and not cancelling the online reservation, so we're left standing out in the cold (literally). My emails were very polite - so there was no reason for hostility at all.
I went through the reviews and realized men seem to give great reviews and women seem to have problems here. Is that a coincidence? Or maybe Anil (owner) had a terrible experience with other dog owners, that's cool - I understand some people don't treat motels with respect, but those people aren't me, and I didn't deserve such terrible treatment.
No matter what - I'll never stay here and I hope you don't either. The pretty facade isn't worth the treatment. The Massey Motel down the road was incredibly friendly and kind and got us and our fur babies tucked away quickly and in a great room for us - and it was less money!! If you're in the area, save yourself a bad day and go to Massey...
Read moreI chose to book here as my wife and I took a day trip to Iron Bridge and wanted a night away and this motel offered a Jacuzzi suite. The desk attendant who I think was the owner was very nice and helpful. The room itself was clean enough with a King size bed and an updated washroom with the Jacuzzi in the main area of the room. The Jacuzzi itself was clean but this is where the good news ends as it was not enjoyable. The water was no where near warm enough coming from the tap even with no cold water added to the mix, he tub itself had air forced jets which cool the water as well. Although it looked big enough for two people it was barely and it was not comfy for sure. The extra cost we paid to have the this feature was in no way worth it and I would not go back to stay in that room but if you wanted a cheap motel with clean rooms and good service then it is passable. ||All in all there are better options so give this room and...
