An awesome stay at the Blue Vista Resort on Mayne Island.
As they're listed as cottages and referred to in some reviews as cabins, I was expecting something basic and rustic, but was more than pleasantly surprised to discover an extremely clean, spacious, and modern suite, more like a hotel than a cabin.
While retaining a charming 1960s resort vibe (pine paneling, fireplace, bookshelves, real artwork, frogs and crickets at night), the furninishings are new and very comfortable. Crisp clean bed linen, wonderful pillows, fluffy towels in the bathroom, everything was perfect.
As I do a lot of cooking I was extremely happy with the kitchen. Very clean, well-working fridge and stove, nice cutlery and dishes, and a really decent set of basic kitchen tools and pots and pans. As the resort is just a few minutes away from the main grocery stores on the island, I was able to whip up a decent artichoke heart gratin in a spotless vintage Corningware casserole. Filter coffee-maker and good coffee as well! Woohoo!
All this, plus good wifi, TV, BBQs in the nicely-landscaped ground, and even a great playground for kids (unfortunately I was too big to fit on the slide).
The proprietors obviously take a great deal of pride in their resort and bent over backwards to make sure our stay was comfortable, even calling the ferry for me to ensure that I'd be able to make my departure ferry. Thank you Lise and Gordon, the hardest-working people...
Read moreWe enjoyed our two night stay at Blue Vista's spacious and cozy Sea Lion half duplex. Warm host Lise welcomed us and provided good information about places to visit on the island and what looked like a full collection of Bill Deverell novels. The resort is a little old-fashioned, clean, comfortable and quiet, with easy access to walk our dog on a nearby beach . ||While on the island we enjoyed the spectacular views of Active Pass from the lighthouse, with its beautiful carved whale watching benches and recorded (hand-cranked!)whale song and information about the importance of the site to local first nations. A steep hike up Mt. Parke, offered 180 degree views of nearby islands, we also enjoyed hiking beautiful St. John Point, and dog walking at Dinner Bay Park, as well as the touching and lovely Japanese Garden. ||The cabin was well equipped for us to prepare out own meals with some tasty local produce from the Saturday Market. We also enjoyed the best (pickled)Tofu burger ever at the Montrose Local, and very good borscht and something that looked like a peach and tasted like a donut from Georgian/Ukrainian...
Read moreOur stay in August 2015 was terrible. I had a staff of 4 staying there for construction work being done on the island. The owner was extremely rude to my staff. I finally had to tell her after 6 calls to me bitching about the on the 1st day they were there, to stop calling me. She then proceeded to call my husband. She had decided by looking at them that they were going to be trouble, they were too young & irresponsible. They were all in their late 30s. We were there to work 12 hour days, so they were not there except to eat & sleep only. On the 2nd day there she had made reservations for them to move to another hotel, & demanded that I pay for 2 full nights, even though they had only slept there 1 night. I told her that would not be happening. She then drove all over the island trying to find our work site to tell our guys to pack up their stuff & get out. She also proceeded to talk to all her other guests & cause more trouble. They day they checked out, one of he other guests came & told my husband what gentlemen our guys had been. The cabin was not...
