To get to this access point you take Major Lake Road, it is around 30 min drive from Madawaska. The drive in has beautiful scenery, however around half of it is dirt road which is quite bumpy, so drive slow in certain areas of it. Also note that this Access Point isn't on Shall Lake, it is on Farm Lake. There was one on Shall Lake years ago, however this new location is easier and better to access Algonquin so they built one here.
There is two parking lots at this location, the first one will be on your left just before getting to the Access Point. The next one is just farther up on your left which is closer to Farm Lake. There is a bathroom here, however no store so make sure that you have everything you need before coming here. The Permit Office will be on your right across the road.
This access point on Aug long weekend I would say was a little busy, but compared to the other popular Access Points, like Canoe Lake, it wasn't busy at all.
If you rented canoes from Algonquin Outbound they will be by the permit office, which is an easy walk to Farm Lake where you will be loading your canoes and starting your adventure.
The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable about the park. To help them out and to get you on the water faster, having all the necessary information needed ready will be useful. The questions they will ask you are, Names of all the campers, how many canoes/kayaks, Licences plates and the owners phone number, colour of your tents/shelters. If you haven't booked a campsite, they will also need to know the lakes you want to camp on and...
Read moreWent from June 30-July 5. The youths at the party site were loud, but hard to hear further down the lake. Mosquitoes and horse flies were bad, so bring your bug repellant. Beautiful swimming, much wildlife, we had great weather and the lake was nice and calm and fun to paddle. Hard to find a tree to hang your food - bring a bear barrel. Raccoons were not a problem, but I had my dog, so that may have helped. There are a variety of sites, some rocky some flat and some hilly and some swampy. Some have beaches, and some have straight walk ups. May want to check them out before choosing. There's a thunder box and a log type table at each site. It's not flat, but it's a surface. And there seem to be benches or at least logs to sit on at each site. But no back support. There's no ice at the check in cabin - they only seem to sell souvenirs. It was a...
Read moreAlways enjoy this access point. I've been in it countless times to either enjoy Booth and or Shirley or to go way back including the loop up to Dickson then thru round and out thru both - counterclockwise.
The staff are awesome and always ready to assist even if your trip needs an update.
One note is - mind the warnings for Ryan Lake - Dickson and Laville. The Blue Green Algae posses a serious risk to the health of people and pets.
And another note is - Shirley is a good backcountry lake for trippers with begginers as there is a logging road in case assisstance is needed. And there is spotty...
