Truly heaven on Lake Superior; we had the pleasure of staying here for two nights earlier in July. It was all we expected and more, and certainly the highlight of our trip. We received a really warm welcome and tour of the grounds on arrival (and got to meet the owners awesome dog, Sharif). There's plenty of room to relax both inside and out, with a large common area with sofas, a deck with Muskoka chairs and a few beaches just steps away.

The hotel is ideally situated at the mouth of the river, but with only a limited number of beautifully presented rooms available (with some mod cons - hot water, power and WiFi), book early to avoid disappointment! Whilst a number of rooms (including ours) are just off the main common area, we found other guests and the staff to be very courteous throughout.

There are loads of activities on offer if you choose to partake (kayaking, guided hikes etc) though as our main reason for staying was to visit Lake Superior PP, we didn't find the time to give any a go.

I also highly recommend the home cooked dinner, which while very tasty and varied, is also great value for money. My only comment is that dinner time was a little early for me!

Lastly, as others have said, this really is a landscape photographers paradise! A few examples attached.

We will be back when we return...

100% recommendation for Rock Island Lodge & Northern Superior Adventures! All the way from the amazing kitchen staff, to our guides: Wesley, Shayna and Lorelie. I did the weekend getaway, We kayaked from Rock Island Lodge and went up Lake Superior for about 3 hours. Along the way, we had a fantastic and yummy lunch at the light house! A must see along the way! After some more time on the water, we arrived at our camp for some beach camping overnight. I loved every minute of this trip; from being on the water, having great guides, meeting new & friendly people, the scenery and home cooked meals :) I started my trip in Burlington, just outside of Toronto. I drove up solo to Wawa and was once again stunned by the beauty of the North! I can't wait to drive up again next summer! Our guides were fantastic and very well prepared for the entire adventure, from providing dinner and breakfast and knowing where all the little gem spots were along the way while paddling. I can not recommend this get a way experience enough! I can say that I will continue to book with Rock Island Lodge & Northern Superior Adventures every summer from now on! Thanks for an amazing adventure and sharing your passion of...

I highly recommend Naturally Superior Adventures and Rock Island Lodge. My friend and I ran a small group photography workshop with NSA where they guided us on a multi-day Voyageur Canoe expedition to The Dog River and Denison Falls. Our guides were top-notch! Extremely knowledgeable about the area and highly skilled. Our meals both at the lodge and on the trip were fantastic. On the nights either side of our trip, our group took advantage of all the accommodation options - beach camping, prospector tents, glamdomes, and their rooms in the lodge, and everyone was happy with their choice. Rave reviews all around! We can't wait until the next workshop!

I was so pleased with the entire experience that I came back for a personal trip a month or so later. I brought my dog with me and he enjoyed his stay as much, if not more, than I did. My room was clean and comfortable, the staff were helpful and friendly (and made my dog, Hudson, feel like a VIP), and you simply can't beat the location!

If you're planning to spend a day exploring Lake Superior Provincial Park, I'd recommend ordering their boxed lunch - it...

Rock Island Lodge is an unsurpassed location at the mouth of the Michipicoten River. If the lake is flat enjoy the coastline east or west. If the lake is wavey, enjoy the waves or paddle the river. Or you can always sit on the deck or on a rock or a sand beach somewhere and just enjoy the view, or hike the trails in nearby Superior Provincial Park. In September, when the salmon run, there is fishing. We have been on three Voyageur Canoe trips with N.S. and, in my opinion, it's the only way to see the magnificence of Lake Superior. The big canoe is very sea-worthy and fast, easily holding 14 people plus gear. We took an intro to sea kayaking course as well as a Level 2 course. We have also done a self-supported sea kayak trip to the Dog River as well as a trip to the Slate Islands, and numerous day trips from the lodge. The food is plentiful, the accommodations first class, the staff always cheerful and helpful. We try to include a week of vacation on Superior every year. Lake Superior is Georgian Bay on steroids.

It pains me to give Rock Island Lodge 4 stars and not 5. We adore this place. We have stayed in the Patterson Suit before (great option), but this time around the only accommodation available for our dates was the glam dome (pro tip: Book well in advance!). We booked based on our previous awesome experience. But the dome, in all honesty, is not at all glam or luxe. Nor is it near worth $160 a night. The furniture is worn, old, and stained. Like all domes, this one becomes a furnace during the day and is uninhabitable (though it cools down quick). Another irk is that communications with the lodge are godawful - I emailed and called multiple times weeks ahead of our visit to book a canoe trip, no one ever answered or responded. Such an odd thing to do, it feels as though they are actively thwarting business. Anyway, all that is to say that booking the lodge (if it’s available) is the way to go. And maybe wait until you get there to arrange tours. Regardless, this place is a slice of heaven.
