Upon booking, Roberto, the Italian owner contacted me to offer an English speaking Taxi pick up from the airport. This set the standard for the 5 days that we spent there. We were very well looked after every day.||The driver, Edmar spoke great English and finished up as our guide as well during the week, all arranged by Roberto.||We reached the B&B out of town past the new hospital and the Fogo tip! It is a 30 minute walk along the beach to get access to the town and the flotsam and jetsam on the beach is a sadness but a sign of the times. We found it an easier walk along the road that the taxi travelled but certainly not as picturesque as the beach.||Once there, it is an idyllic spot that Roberto bought as a house and converted to four rooms and separate bathrooms with an enclosed verandah as the dining room. The Rooms are functional, given that most residents want to visit the crater and see the island but there is also the opportunity to relax around the garden either at covered tables built in to the wall overlooking the beach or in hammocks. The shower rooms are functional but probably in need of refurb.||The proximity of the sea and the site of Brava a short distance away makes this wonderful although the sound of crashing waves at night may keep some people awake. Just remember that the next thing from this beach is the Antarctic!||The delight of the B&B is the food. Breakfast is based on the home-grown fruit in the garden, including dates, so it is very fresh and healthy. Roberto recommends places to eat for the evening meal but is happy to provide meals, acting as a small restaurant for non-residents. These meals are special. Fresh fish and local or home-grown vegetables. The fish is perfectly cooked and usually caught that day. There is not much choice but is by negotiation at the start of the day.||We loved...
Read moreThe Tortuga B&B is a blissfully peaceful hideaway, located around a mile east of the town of Sao Filipe. It was quite clear during my stay there that the owner takes great pride in what he does, particularly in providing amazing, three-course meals to both guests and visitors - the food is just delicious, and abundant in all forms of tastes. Although the bathrooms on the ground floor are not attached to the rooms, they are still private and only a short walk away down the corridor. The Tortuga is close enough to town to be able to see its main sights, via a delightful 30-minute walk along the black-sand beach with its crashing waves. It is also far enough away to feel like it is completely off-the-beaten track and away from all forms of civilisation and its related stresses. There is plenty of time to spend just swinging in the hammocks or watching the powerful waves crash against the shore. The owner can also arrange a variety of tours around the island, making the place still very much connected to everything else. A wonderful and very...
Read moreA place you don't expect when your taxi takes jou there... A green oase on Fogo with an Italian owner (Roberto) who's main concern seems to be taking care of his guests and prepare excellent lunch and dinner! The food is great with an Italian touch but real cabeverdian products. The most of them he grows or makes himself. Whe had smoked black merlin, ham of tuna, excellent goat cheese (also homemade) chutney of papaya and mango, tuna with pink pepper and lots more. All homemade and all excellent quality and taste. The B&B (more like an hotel thanks to Roberto's service) is very near a black beach where you can enjoy the ocean and see fisherman catch theire fish. Quiet place, a place to enjoy nature, food, the local wine, etc|Taxi to city center is about 4/500 esc and you can ask the same driver to bring...
