I enjoyed my stay here, perhaps they've attempted to fix some of the things since past reviews were written?||||The lobby is grand, and I presume the marble staircases go somewhere, because we saw a wedding party ascending them, with singing and music, and a nervous looking groom. Some would call the furniture oppressive, but it just seemed old fashioned and ornate to me, and fairly in keeping with similar furnishings in Uyghur restaurants which had brocade, carved wood and chandeliers in abundance.||||The breakfast buffet had a wide range of dishes, lots of cold chinese dishes, quite a few sweet baked goods including walnut filled cookies, yoghurt, fresh fruit, flat Uyghur style bread. Their schedule is a little different to Beijing time understandably, as they're a long way west. Bear that in mind if you have an early start. If you want all the dishes to be out and ready, don't go to breakfast before 8:20 am. ||||I don't smoke, but perhaps I'm too used to smokers, so didn't notice any smell in the rooms. Rooms were comfortable. I always bring earplugs when I travel, and as there some renovations going on nearby, and military singing from what I think might be a police academy next door daily, I was glad I did. Shower and toilet worked well, beds were soft and comfortable, with good quality bedding. House keeping were a little erratic, as mentioned by other reviewers. One time they came while I was still in my room, about 6 pm, took my wet towels, but didn't give me any new ones. ||||All in all, I really enjoyed the experience. The decor and atmosphere felt exotic, and all the important things functioned well; having food to eat, a nice place to sleep, wash and refresh yourself. It was great being in the Uyghur district too, and so close to the...
Read moreMy group originally had a booking of 3 nights but transferred to the Meiyu hotel across the street after staying one night only.||||I had seen the bad reviews but our tour planner, Ablajan Jilil, mentioned it was renovated just last year so was new now. Fact. Not all rooms have been renovated.||||It would have been fine even if it was old as long as it was clean. The rooms given to us were not. You'd think it was barely cleaned with the amount of dust on the walls, ceiling and corners. The hallways smelled of smoke.||||They offered to give us better rooms reserved for another group and I commend them for at least that. We checked it out, it was cleaner and looked brighter but the air was still not ok for us. It didn't smell of smoke but probably due to the dust in the hotel overall, it was causing allergic reactions in some people in my group.||||So we had no choice but to transfer out after one night with our medicine and stuffy noses.||||Location of the hotel is very good. Near the Grand Bazaar and behind it is a street with restaurants thats alive at night.||||Hotel food was also good with a variety of choices though be warned its typical western China food...
Read moreThe Tumaris hotel in Urumqi is located in the Tianshan District of Urumqi, not in walking distance to the Hongshan-Park and the center of Urumqui. While the hotel entrance and reception area look quite impressive, the rooms urgently need a renovation. What the four stars are for, remains hidden to the guest. I would not even give this hotel 2 stars. The furniture is old and looks very used, the doorframes are corroded. Floor 7 was called a "non-smoking" floor, but there were ash trays in all rooms and the smell of cigarettes. There is only one elevator to floors higher than 6 and it can only be reached via a small tunnel. If people leave the elevator, the tunnel is blocked and the elevator door closes before the tunnel can be entered by those waiting. The breakfast was Chinese only. Positive is the free Wifi; negative the bad English of the...
