My 3 weeks stay was already the second at Wuke. The first was right after Wuke was constructed, then one of the tallest buildings around, but with only one electric outlet per room and just partly connected plumbing. Wuke has moved forward in time since, but not by much. Carpets have likely not been shampooed since they were installed. Bathrooms are breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Staff is unprofessional.||||Positives include the fact that the hotel is inexpensive, free wired internet is provided, a refrigerator, and breakfast is provided for a negligible fee. The hotel is next to the buildings of the Academy of Sciences as well as of the terminal station of the airport bus #5. However, staff is largely unfamiliar with English. It was impossible to arrange a reservation over the phone and my email remained unanswered. I had to rely on hosts to arrange a reservation. Breakfast trays were commonly empty and to eat you often had to find a space between dirty dishes since the staff was not removing them after the customers have left. On numerous occasions, the maid tried to enter the room at 8am, or right after, to clean the room although I was clearly there and e.g. opening the door in the state of semi-dress. A desk is there in the room, but most of its space is taken out by a TV and there is no illumination for the desk. Within the bathroom, the leaky shower sprays water on the floor covered by a plastic mesh, in order to make the floor usable thereafter. The mesh holds water and apparently becomes a breeding area for mosquitoes. Every evening I had to engage in an extensive hunt before going to sleep - otherwise I was waking up to multiple bites. Air conditioning generally worked fine, as well as TV. The closet was too narrow for hangers there, so using the closet was each time a bit of adventure. There was really no space for storing a suitcase or actually spreading its contents. ||||The bed was indeed hard, but that is common for China. I solve this by traveling with a small...
Read moreI thought this place would be OK give that I am visiting the Chinese Academy of Sciences and it was part of the recommended placed. Unfortunately, the hotel was likely the filthiest I have ever been at. Furthermore, the bathroom is one giant wet zone. This means that if you take a shower you will not be able to do anything in there (including poo) without getting wet. The pipes go into a hole in the ground meaning that sewer smell comes up. The room carpet is completely stained, the walls behind the beds and faceplates of switches brown. Disgusting. The bed is as hard as a brick while the pillows offer no support. The service is horrible: I asked for a nonsmoking room with a double bed, I got a smoking room with two beds. When I asked for a different room I got a nonsmoking room with two beds and was told that that was all they had. It took some telepathic powers to understand the staff that did not speak English. Stay away...
Read moreI found this Hotel to be perfectly fine. It was very comfortable, and very clean. Wired (but not wireless) internet was available for free. The cafeteria downstairs was great, if simple. I appreciated having breakfast with (what I assumed were) students. The staff spoke broken English, and tried very hard to help with everything I needed. The maid liked to do my room at 9 AM, but was very friendly and willing to wait. Yes, the bathroom is a bit odd, with no real separate shower stall. Yes, the bathroom gets a bit wet when you shower, but the sink and toilet don't get wet unless you are overly energetic in the shower. This aspect was perfectly useable, if a bit different from what I'm used to. The bed was hard, but not ridiculously so, and I actually liked it. Overall, I would definitely stay here again if the...
