I stayed at The Rainbird in Chengdu on a Tuesday night. It was my second time to stay here and I had high hopes because of my first visit. This time I was disappointed though. First, the bellman didn't offer to help me with my luggage when I exited my taxi even though I was clearly struggling and he was doing nothing. Second, there were no instructions on which direction to insert the room card to keep the lights on and the alarm off. The LED on the card holder did not light up regardless of which way I inserted the card. Third, ROOM THERMOSTATS DON'T WORK! When I called the front desk two different people explained to me that they keep ALL the hotel rooms at the same temperature and that the room thermostats don't work. It was 75F in my room, warmer than I like to sleep at. They suggested I open my window or balcony door and I did but had to listen to the honking of cars on the busy street outside even though I was on the 7th floor. Fourth, the room walls were so thin that I could hear my neighbor's TV shows late into the night. Fifth, the Business class room I stayed in this time was MUCH plainer than the Executive class room I stayed in last time. I would have been better off choosing a cheap hotel on a...

Read moreThis is comparatively new budget hotel that lies in an outer district of Chengdu. It's close to the metro (Shuhan West station) and there always seem to be plenty of taxies about so it's easy to get around if you have work elsewhere in Chengdu.||||We stayed for two nights and found it okay for a short stay, especially as the staff were friendly and helpful to us at every turn. The breakfast buffet was reasonable without being special, the internet connections were slow and suited small messages, the rooms were clean with plenty of space. A walk around after work in the evenings was rewarded by discovery of some good hotpot restaurants nearby serving fresh food. They were noisy but true Sichuan cuisine I was told.||||The small, poorly appointed fitness center on the top floor is better than nothing, but could certainly benefit from the addition of one or two good machines. They are not that expensive and management take note: if you style yourself as an 'International' hotel, things like this are important. As is a good espresso coffee machine in the breakfast area; for some of us that's the first thing we look forward to in...
