Royal Marina Plaza Hotel — Hotel in Guangzhou City

The hotel is quite grand looking from the outside, but the rooms could use some updating. The bathrooms look recently remodeled, but the carpets, furniture and decorations are showing a lot of age. My room had a stale cigarette smell that was probably from the old carpets and furniture. The hotel hallways were heavily scented to mask the old odors. The scents were quite nice, actually, but if you are sensitive to such things, then this place is not for you. ||||The beds (most important part of any hotel stay) were very clean and the pillows and linens were comfortable, however, my king bed was Chinese style hard. By the second morning of my stay, my hips and back were feeling the strain from sleeping on the hard surface. Maybe they have more western-style beds in other rooms? i didn't ask. Overall I slept reasonably well. Not much noise from the hallways or adjacent rooms. ||||I also found it hard to control the temperature in the room. It was cold outside but my room wouldn't heat warm enough to feel warm inside. I had the control setting maxed out.||||The Japanese restaurant inside the hotel was pretty good. Excellent sushi. There is a shopping mall about 10 minutes walk down the street that has a supermarket and lots of dining options from fast food to sit-down.||||Overall, the hotel was ok. At first I was impressed by the look of the hotel and the lobby which welcomed me. The check in was smooth and room allotted was clean and comfortable. Aircon is really noisy and can disturb sleep if you are used to quiet room. There is no room service of food. The choice of restaurants are three Cafe buffet, Japanese and Chinese. I did end up going to buffet restaurant so as to have a better choice as I was travelling alone. Spread was not disappointing and had something or the interesting to eat especially i having a particular choice being an Indian Non Vegetarian. The staff was helpful and courteous. The restaurant can get noisy due to some local guests. Overall a good value for money at this restaurant. The worst part is the wifi which is pathetic and I had do some official work and staying connected was big challenge. Even on mobile I could hardly watch YouTube or update Facebook. The connection was just name sake to watch some low data usage sites or apps. Very frustrating experience. They really need to invest on wifi infrastructure.
