Gyantse Hotel — Hotel in Gyantse County

I was one of a group of 12 visiting Tibet. We arrived with prior warning about this hotel. |The lobby on initial sighting is very large open and “grand” but on closure examination the chairs are stained with ?? And there is a bizarre indoor geranium garden with chairs surrounding it like a care home. |The rooms while sporting clean linen were in need of a major updating and coordinating. Bathroom was turquoise, bright pink and avocado with mildew and visiting silverfish. The shower was totally unusable as didn’t have a fitting to hold it on the wall,and it leaked so strip wash it was, thankfully there was hot water in my room. As we were only there overnight this wasn’t too much of an issue. Utilizzato per una sola notte alla fine di settembre 2018. Posizione solo discreta, a circa venti minuti di distanza a piedi dai luoghi di maggiore interesse ( Kumbum e residuale porzione della città vecchia) ma con una bella vista (soprattutto dal pianerottolo dell'ascensore ) sulla fortezza che si erge sulla montagnola di fronte ( ricostruita in tempi recenti dopo il passaggio della rivoluzione culturale ). All'esterno si apprezza il sempiterno tentativo di restituire un'immagine di opulenza e monumentalità tipico di più o meno tutte le strutture ricettive tibetane made in China, mentre, all'interno, nelle stanze, il balzo indietro nel tempo risulta assolutamente più ardito di quanto la scritta all'ingresso, relativa all'anno di costruzione, parrebbe documentare (1986). La sensazione è quella di essere improvvisamente catapultati nella camera di una pensioncina in riviera adriatica degli anni '70 con tutto ciò che ne consegue in termini di condizioni del bagno, dei mobili, delle luci etc. etc, cristallizzati a quell'epoca ed alle relative ( scarse ) esigenze del tempo. Complessivamente il livello di pulizia può essere considerato sufficiente, soprattutto in considerazione degli standard qualitativi tibetani, ma la scelta nell'offerta del cibo sia a cena che a colazione è risultata modestissima, così come la qualità, nonostante l'ostentata teatralità dell'immensa sala nella quale si viene ospitati che trasuda una superficiale e complessivamente inutile, in quanto fine a sè stessa, ricchezza di addobbi e decorazioni ( leggi sedie dorate e decorazioni ricercate che ricoprono ogni centimetro delle pareti). Sicuramente elemento per certi versi qualificante è la presenza di un orto/giardino sul retro dell'edificio dal quale con ogni probabilità si acquisiscono ortaggi/verdure e frutta per la cucina del ristorante e dove, tra l'altro, incredibile a dirsi, pascola un nutrito gregge di...

This is an old hotel that has seen better days and is in dire need of refurbishment. However, it is allegedly the best in the city (for now).||BUT the foyer area alone was worth the visit. It is so over the top in its decorations, paintings, pot plants and scary mannequins. A unique experience - I spent ages looking at everything there. Also, it is the only area in the hotel where you can get wi-fi.||The rooms are tired and very basic - but mine was very clean and tidy and most things worked.
