I've stayed at this hotel five times in total now, including four times in the past calendar year. Sadly, I've only been returning because of the very convenient location near my family. This property has in one way or another fallen short of expectations during every visit. It's not terrible by any means, but it's a real hit-or-miss experience and no where near what I expect from a Westin.
Room service has been unbelievably slow a number of times, resulting in cold food and melted ice. I suspect more staff need to be on duty or perhaps just simply need to be better trained.
The various restaurants are continually out of items on the menu. That's just bad management. Once or twice I can see but this seems to happen at nearly every meal.
The lounge bar continues to offer Bloody Mary's but has NEVR had the ingredients to make one in any night I've stayed there after at least 20 requests ( yes - 20). In fact, the last stay they couldn't make any five drinks I requested before we finally settled on a bottle of wine. Yes, I went down the bar menu asking for various cocktails (again, all on the menu) and each time the waitress ran off to the bar and then come back empty-handed, apologetically explaining the various reasons they couldn't make each drink. It became something like an Abbott & Costello routine. If you have the drink on the menu be able to provide it OR take it off the menu. Again, once - even twice, sure that can happen, but...
The last time we ate at Grange in August there was a very loud group in a private dining room not 20 feet from our table. After three weeks on the road my wife and I just wanted a quiet Western dinner alone. I mildly complained and the poor waitress made a few attempts at closing the doors but never said anything to the patrons nor did she offer to move us to another table further away. We were the only other people in the place and there was another section of the dining room available and completely empty. Like, crickets chirping empty.
Items 1, 2, 3 and 4 I spoke to junior managers about and received concerned looks and profuse apologies and promises to do better. Meh - I'm hoping so.
During our last stay in August our room was quite shabby. The desk chair's leather backing was peeling off and deteriorating, the desk facing was scratched and delaminating and there was a huge water stain on the ceiling. We hadn't noticed this before in any of our other stays. Not up to the Westing standard.
Twice we've stayed in winter and were not able to control the heat in our room. This is not uncommon in China but I didn't expect it at a Westin branded hotel. That's why we stay here. Both times we had to call the front desk and once we needed to move (very late at night) to another room and the second time they managed to get the temp down to an acceptable temperature - after an hour.
Still, my biggest complaint has to do with a missed night that never got credited to my SPG account. We arrived well after midnight and while we were of course charged for the night we never got credit for the night, receiving 4 nights credit instead of 5. I only noticed it after we got home and I couldn't find the actual folio. I wrote to SPG and they said they could do nothing without the folio. I called the hotel (twice) asking them to please send me a copy. Never received it. No follow up at all. I travel a lot and I'm busy (we all are) as evidenced by the fact that I'm just now writing this review and my last stay here was five months ago. It's not worth my time to keep chasing one night credit BUT - it's still irks me.
All that said the hotel can have it's moments. Often everything is very good. It's a beautiful facility and everyone is very courteous and friendly BUT - it takes more than smiling faces in the hospitality business.
There are some other SPG options in Hefei and even though they are not as convenient, I imagine I'll be giving one of those properties a try next time I'm in town. I'm hoping that one day The Westin will be more...
Read moreHi, I am currently serving a long-term work assignment in Hefei. This is the 2nd long term assignment in Hefei, China. I have currently been located in Baohe Westin Hotel for about a year. I am very fortunate with my company supporting a Suite Room at the hotel. The hotel has been very accommodating with the upgrades to the suite, starting with adding a washer/dryer all in one, and a small kitchenette with large refrigerator. The room is ample size, with an amazing bathroom. I have a large spacious living area with a high-rise view. I can not speak highly enough about the staff friendliness and professionalism. If I have a request for about anything, they will try and help solve it. A couple of examples mailing a letter to the US. They were more than helpful with me going thru this process. Requesting space for company companionship has always been accommodating. This is truly a 5 star staff, I really appreciate having the ability to get train tickets picked up prior to departing. If you have ever traveled in China, you know the pain of waiting in line to pick up your ticket at the foreigner window. The frustrations of people cutting, smoking, pushing is annoying. As I stated, the staff was more than willing to go and retrieve my tickets. I just need to pay their taxi fee, which I was more than willing to pay. If you plan to stay at this hotel, I would recommend trying to get a high level West facing view. South/West is Baohe park, which is very convenient to the hotel. You can walk out of the hotel and walk around the park without even interacting with the road. It is roughly a 5k loop. One other highlight, I have been here for a year and the breakfast is still good. There are a ton of options and for the most part consistent. A few of the negatives, this is a Chinese hotel there will be smoking within the hotel. It is just part of the culture which is slowly changing, but it is something that can not change over night. Therefore they have ash trays, no matter what you do you will have smoking by some guests, it is better to capture the rubbish rather than it being on the ground/in the elevator/in the public sinks/toilets. The suite is great as I stated before, the couch could use some improving on comfort. Internet bandwidth could be increased, or it may be a Chinese censorship issue, not sure. They do have an onsite gym and indoor pool. The pool is huge and very clean. The gym is a little small and usually crowded after work. Being a long term guest I have the option to join a local gym across the street so that solved that issue. THe gym is technically staffed at 6:00 AM but with a room card you can gain access any time. Overall this is a 5 star hotel located in the business center of Hefei. It is convenient walking distance to two malls, walking street, and parks. There a bunch of restaurants in the vicinity varying from Japanese / Chinese / German. No shortage of...
Read moreThis Westin Hefei hotel is not on par with Marriott International Standard. Apart from its strategic location in downtown, I would say this hotel has no other advantage comparing to other surrounding hotels.||The check in process was sluggish. The front desk working slowly and it was 11pm. After the guest has been taking long hour journey to arrive in the hotel and the front desk staffs taking their own sweet time. This hotel does not appreciate Bonvoy elite status. We were under corporate travelers and most of the Marriott hotels will appreciate our corporate partnership and provide us complimentary upgrade privilege especially Executive Lounge access. Somehow, they mentioned only platinum elites can be upgraded. If you are Bonvoy elite members, Platinum Elite for upgrade is an entitlement, not a privilege. They really think we are not familiar with Bonvoy elite entitlement....||For breakfast, they expect you to sign the bill at the entrance (Standard Practice of all other Marriott hotels) except there was no usher to table service. The hotel expects you to acknowledge the breakfast payment then you have to do self service including finding a table and getting your own coffee. Food quality is average and replenishment is slow. ||The room Aircond is centralized control. No matter how you set the regulator, it still showing 24 degree C. Which is kind of warm that affecting sleep quality. The in room dining menu were at least 70% not available when you wanted to order around 9pm for ALL DAY Menu.||The booking of this hotel did not show up in the Bonvoy apps. And I confirmed with front desk staff they told me that is IT problem. Come on, you should fix it instead of giving this type of dropping the ball attitude. This is the first time ever a hotel booking and check in never shown up in Bonvoy apps.||All in all, this will be my last stay in this hotel. There are some other better brand hotel around and I do not recommend this hotel to business travelers based on the poor services rendered for my past 3...
