The Palace is one of the best hotels in Jiangmen. In previous stays in Jiangmen, I went to the Yucca Hotel. I thought I would try the nearby Palace this trip. It considers itself a 5-star hotel by Chinese standards. However, I am not a Chinese reviewer. Let's start with the positives.||||The room is very nice for the price. The bed was comfortable. We stayed on the 11th floor for the free wifi access and for the smoke-free room. A nice surprise the was the electronic Japanese-style toilet which washes the bottom side when you are done. Another nice surprise was that we could set the air conditioning to any temperature we wanted. Other hotels I have stayed at in China will not cool the room below 24C. The housekeeping staff is quick and friendly when handling service requests. ||||Now...a few issues.||||1. Most of the staff seem either arrogant, uncaring, or incompetent. No one smiled when talking to us. This included the doormen, the check-in desk staff, the restaurant hostess, the swimming pool staff and the afternoon shift manager. They seem to think that since the Palace is recognized as one of the best hotels in Jiangmen, it is our privilege to stay there. It is not their privilege to have me as a paying guest. The staff at the Yucca Hotel is much more friendly and welcoming. ||||2. Like many hotels in China which include breakfast in the rate, the breakfast is just so-so. The kitchen had a hard time keeping up with the number of guests. At 9:30 they were running out of food at more than half of the stations, and they were very slow to replace the plates with fresh food. The egg station was okay...the chef cooked the eggs made-to order. While I was getting my eggs, some country bumpkin took my toast out of the toaster. This seems to be typical mainland behavior. A rube dressed in any manner is still a rube. The Yucca Hotel also put out a so-so breakfast, but their kitchen staff kept up with the demand. No one ever stole my toast at the Yucca Hotel. The breakfast is billed as an "international" breakfast buffet. Offering coffee and low quality sausage and ham does not make this an "international" buffet. ||||3. If you are coming to the Palace Hotel from outside of China and want to swim during your stay , buy a Chinese-style speedo swimsuit. We went down for a nice relaxing swim, but I was denied access. I had an American shorts-style swimsuit. I could not convince them that I was wearing an American swimsuit. It was not a speedo, so it was not a swimsuit. Since it was not a swimsuit, I could not enter. I complained to the afternoon shift general manager, but she could not solve the problem. I showed her the mesh lining to prove it was a swimsuit. That did not help. Once again, I ran up again the narrow mainland mindset. The manager had no idea how to solve the problem. Anything out of the ordinary causes a mainland mind to shut down and go into automatic response mode. She kept asking for my room number as if that would change any of the facts. On top of this, the swimming pool staff were the rudest of all the hotel staff. ||||The Palace needs to train all its staff on proper customer service. I don't expect much at a 7-Days Inn. At a self-proclaimed 5-star hotel, I do expect courtesy from those who interact with the guests. ||||The Yucca Hotel is less that two kilometers away. There is a mall with many restaurants attached to the Yucca Hotel. The Yucca Hotel is served with more bus routes. The Yucca is not a true 5-star hotel, but it is clearly a much better property than the Palace...
Read moreIf this is a more recent picture of the hotel.... We must have been in the very old part of it. It 100% improved... When I went with my sister and sister in law, we had huge flying roaches flying around in our room, so we call front desk and they told us that to them its is nothing. A normal way of living. We told them that we are from the USA and we are not so they gave us another room, only to open the door to have a flying roach come straight at us, and we immediately shut the door before it could get to.us.... Then, we had 3 men knock on our door when my sister in law checked through the peephole they're were inviting us to dinner in their underwear walking around the hotel. Lots of them were dressed in there business shirts and ties and underwear only and the women were all.fully dressed as to be expected.. We again call down to the front desk and they told us the same thing.... It was customary for them in those part. I loved china so much but that was one of the.worst hotel I've have ever stayed in... We stood there for 2 days only and headed back to the shamrock hotel in...
