Dunhuang is located next to the Gobi Desert, and we were apprehensive about the quality of the hotels in this remote area of China. From the moment we had entered the hotel lobby, we were pleasantly surprised at how nice this hotel was in terms of quality of the room, service, location and views of the surrounding area. ||The hotel lobby is very nice and large in size - there is a huge, lovely mural that is located directly above the front check-in desk. The hotel exterior and public areas were very clean and very nicely decorated. There are two (2) restaurants at this hotel -- one is a traditional Chinese restaurant and the other is a western style restaurant that is located on the top (4th floor) floor above the main lobby. The western style restaurant is also the location where breakfast is served each morning. The view of the surrounding area from this 4th floor restaurant is stunning - the sand hills of the Gobi Deseret surrounds the back side of the hotel providing great views of the huge sand dunes. We had both breakfast and dinner here at this restaurant and we thoroughly enjoyed the scenery. ||||Our hotel room was very nice - very clean and beautifully decorated. We had a room upgrade to one with a view of the Gobi Desert from the bedroom window - nice! We had spent two (2) nights at this hotel and wished we could stay longer because the rooms were so comfortable and the food and service at the restaurants was very good. Also, the waitresses at the western restaurant understand and speak English which is great for me since I cannot speak any Chinese. Usually restaurants in the remote areas of China do not have English speaking restaurant employees. To make ordering at this restaurant easier, the menu had photos of the items as well as English descriptions.||||As for evening entertainment, there is very nice show theater that is located behind the hotel property and is easy walking distance from the hotel. The show was very entertaining and plenty of music and action, and to make things more interesting, the whole seating area rotates from one stage to another stage - nice!||||In summary, we had a great time at this hotel - clean, comfortable, good food...

Read moreWith a location close to the Crescent Moon Lake, and Leiyin Temple, as well as a bus stop right in front of the entrance that takes one to the heart of the city (line 3), this is more than an opportune spot to start your journey in Dunhuang.
They sport two dinner venues on the property (one across from the parking lot and one in the interior of the resort), and one breakfast buffet on the roof (from 7-10:30am, 88 yuan per person), and all of them are decent to excellent fare. The roof top deck/eatery has a stunning view of the mountainous sand dunes of the Gobi Desert.
There's also a gift shop on the second floor, just in case. :)
The entrance is grand and sweeping, like a castle. The rooms (I stayed in a one bedroom, three bed suite) are clean and have wonderful amenities, as well as a small fridge. There is well regulated A/C and heat for the chilly evenings, so you never have to worry about temperatures.
The staff were warm and accommodating, and you can call them ahead of time to arrange for cheap transport between the airport and the hotel. If you like, that same driver may also be available to guide you through Dunhuang's many historical and natural wonders. A little experience with the Chinese language will help here.
All in all a truly enjoyable stay. I would recommend it over any other resort...
