I spent five nights (May 24 to 29, 2018) at the Howard Johnson City of Flower Hotel in Kunming. From the exterior, and on first impression, I found the massive hotel to be sleek & of modern design. But once I stepped inside the hotel, I was shocked to see the plain and non-impressive interior. The check-in area is small, bland, and completely without character. While good for the tourist bus crowd, not good for someone seeking more than a three star accommodation. I also found it very strange that there were no places to sit outside the hotel & that the hotel did not have a bar or restaurant. Given the constant flow of tour buses full of Chinese tourists in and out of the hotel, it appears that Chinese tour bus business is the hotel’s primary source of revenue.||Staff were courteous and efficient. I stayed in room 5-1136, featuring a king size bed, separate sitting area, large bathroom, with soaker tub & separate large shower. All towels, linens & pillows were of good quality. I found my room to be very quiet, although it had finicky in-room air conditioning (that seemed to have a mind of its own, working properly only 50% of the time). My room rate included the breakfast buffet in their 2nd floor breakfast room.||Overall, I have to say that the Howard Johnson City of Flower Hotel in Kunming is a good hotel for Westerners looking for moderate priced accommodation in a clean and safe environment (as long as the physical location of the hotel is an area of Kunming satisfactory to the patron, as it does seem to be in an area of the city away from most attractions & businesses). I give it a score...
Read moreI read some mixed reviews on the hotel. But the value was so great decided to go for it. Even over Hilton Hotel I was looking at. THIS PLACE WAS WONDEFUL. I have nothing but great things to say about the hotel. Wonderful clean rooms. Food options were pretty great. They have a mall in the hotel and a small museum. You will need to use chop sticks for meals. Trays and trays of options from bread to fruits to eggs, vegetables, noodles, pasta and everything inbetween. Staff very attentive and helpful. Hotel location about 20 minutes from airport. but lots of taxi's to get to town as well as buses if you want. Loved China. People were generous and kind. Not much English in Kunming but I never had a problem with taxi drivers, restaurants, venus, shopping. It just all worked and the hotel helped...
Read moreLanded in Kunming 3rd Sep. late night and stayed at this hotel overnight and was out early morning. Room is nice and clean at the Lavender building, the breakfast was another thing. It was more of a Chinese breakfast with very little Western food. Knives, fork and spoons weren't available, I had to use chopsticks for my food and the bread was a disaster for me. Maybe I was too fussy.||Came back to stay in the hotel on the last day of my tour on Sep. 9th, the breakfast is the same, I just had a coffee and skipped everything except the bananas.||Adjacent to the hotel is the City of Flowers, my goodness it was beautiful and mesmerizing. If I come to Kunming again, I will definitely stay at this hotel just for the...
