Quanzhou, Fujian Province – A city with centuries of history, once the largest port of the Maritime Silk Road during the Tang and Song dynasties. Quanzhou is a fascinating blend of Minnan traditions and foreign influences from Arabic, Persian, Indian, and Southeast Asian cultures. Today, it’s both a historical destination with landmarks such as Kaiyuan Temple, the Qingjing Mosque, and Qingyuan Mountain, as well as a modern manufacturing hub for shoes and textiles.||Location & First Impressions||The InterContinental Quanzhou is one of the city’s most distinguished hotels, ideally located at the edge of Jinjiang Bridge within Thaihot Plaza. The property features 290 rooms and suites, two signature restaurants, a Club InterContinental lounge, a fitness and spa center, a swimming pool, and a charming boutique shop selling traditional Minnan Flower Hats unique to Quanzhou.||I had always wanted to visit this particular InterContinental. A typhoon in Xiamen unexpectedly extended my holiday and canceled my train, giving me the perfect opportunity to travel to Quanzhou and finally experience this property.||Pre-Arrival & Reservation||For August 14–15, I booked a Classic Room for ¥777 RMB ($109 USD). As an IHG Diamond Ambassador Member, I enjoyed an excellent package of benefits: a room upgrade, complimentary breakfast, Club Lounge access through my milestone membership, and other thoughtful touches.||What impressed me most was the pre-arrival service—the Guest Services team called before my departure from InterContinental Xiamen to confirm my arrival time, bed preference, and any special requests. This attention to detail already set the tone for the stay.||Arrival & Warm Welcome||After a 75-minute drive from Xiamen, I arrived at around 11 AM and was immediately struck by the grand lobby—a space filled with traditional Quanzhou-inspired artwork and cultural elements that beautifully tied into the city’s heritage.||At the front desk, I was warmly greeted by Front Office Manager Lilian Lin, a Quanzhou native, who not only processed my check-in but also personally offered me a tour of the hotel and recommendations for exploring the city. This level of hospitality was both personal and professional.||Hotel Highlights||- Grand Lobby – Stunning design with cultural artifacts and artwork.|- Minnan Flower Hat Shop – A boutique selling custom-made flower hats, popular for photos and cultural souvenirs.|- Fitness Center & Spa – Indoor swimming pool, 24-hour gym, changing rooms, and spa facilities.|- Commune Restaurant – The hotel’s all-day dining venue, offering both buffet and à la carte menus, including steakhouse classics inspired by IHG’s Char Steakhouse & Bar concept.|- Taifu Chinese Restaurant – A fine-dining Chinese restaurant serving Minnan specialties alongside Cantonese classics.|- Sky Garden (6th Floor) – A beautiful outdoor terrace overlooking Jinjiang Bridge, often used for weddings.|- Club InterContinental Lounge (26th Floor) – An executive lounge with panoramic views of Quanzhou, afternoon tea, happy hour, and unique features such as a wine dispenser, noodle bar, and Fujian tea selections.||Room – Classic River View||My upgraded Room 1816 was a 2 Double Classic River View High-Floor Room (45 sqm / 485 sqft), with a small entryway featuring closet space, luggage rack, and minibar. The minibar stood out with a Kung Fu Tea Set and specialty Fujian teas, plus a welcome fruit plate for elite members.||The bedroom featured two plush beds, a JBL Horizon speaker, a desk, a day bed, and design details inspired by the Maritime Silk Road. Evening turndown included a charming wooden souvenir of Quanzhou’s skyline. The only drawback was that the AC felt inconsistent at times, but the in-room air purifier provided a suitable backup.||The bathroom was elegant, designed like a hallway, with a rainforest shower, bathtub, marble vanity, and Byredo Blanche amenities. While the tub was a bit small for taller guests, the real issue was cleaning—strands of hair on the floor. To their credit, the staff responded gracefully: I was offered complimentary laundry, a Byredo soap gift box, and a souvenir key card—a thoughtful gesture that turned a negative into a positive experience.||Club InterContinental Experience||The Club Lounge was a highlight, both in design and service. Staff members John, Ivy, and Lotta were wonderful.||- Afternoon Tea – A buffet with cakes, savory bites, fresh fruit, and Fujian teas. I enjoyed Da Hong Pao tea, one of the region’s most prized varieties.||- Happy Hour – A balanced selection of Western and Chinese hot dishes, salads, and canapés, plus the unique made-to-order noodle bar. The automated wine dispenser and handcrafted cocktails added another layer of uniqueness.||It was the perfect retreat for relaxation with a view.||Breakfast at Commune||Breakfast, curated by Executive Chef Jack Zhang, was one of the most unique InterContinental breakfasts I’ve experienced. The buffet highlighted Minnan specialties—Quanzhou-style wontons, oyster omelette, mackerel fish soup, and rice noodles—while still providing international staples. A dedicated barista prepared café-style drinks, rivaling any coffee shop.||While the offerings were outstanding, the restaurant was extremely crowded during peak hours. On my morning, a queue formed at the entrance. I would strongly recommend the hotel consider opening the Club Lounge for breakfast during high occupancy to ease the wait.||Dinner at Taifu||On my final evening before returning to Shenzhen, I had dinner at the hotel’s Taifu Chinese Restaurant. We chose the promotional ¥398 RMB ($56 USD) set menu for two, which highlighted traditional Minnan flavors alongside refined presentations. The menu included:||- Pu’er Tea|- Amuse Bouche of Green Grapes in Ice|- Anhai Seaworm in Savory Jelly|- Yongchun White Duck Soup|- Sacha Braised Shrimp Balls|- Traditional Minnan Oyster Omelette|- Seasonal Vegetables in Supreme Soup|- Quanzhou Shrimp Noodles|- Minnan Peanut Soup||The selection was both authentic and memorable, offering a true taste of the region’s culinary identity. My only critique was the pacing—several dishes arrived too quickly, which made it difficult to savor each one at its best temperature.||During the meal, I also had the chance to meet Assistant F&B Director Bobby Zhang, who shared insights into the hotel’s food and beverage program. His passion and knowledge added a personal dimension to the dining experience, elevating it beyond just a meal.||Departure & Aftercare||At checkout, Duty Manager Daniel Li personally assisted with my transfer to the train station. Days later, I received a thoughtful follow-up gift box from Lilian, containing Byredo amenities, a stuffed toy, and a souvenir key card—a gesture that left a lasting impression of genuine hospitality.||Final Thoughts||The InterContinental Quanzhou delivers a unique balance of luxury, cultural immersion, and heartfelt service. While not flawless—housekeeping and restaurant crowd management could improve—the hotel consistently made thoughtful gestures to ensure a positive experience.||For the value (¥777 RMB for a night with upgrades and Club access), this was one of the most outstanding InterContinental stays I’ve had in China. I left Quanzhou not only impressed with the hotel but also with a deeper appreciation for the city’s rich cultural identity.||I look forward to returning and would wholeheartedly recommend this property to both business and leisure travelers...

I stayed at Intercontinental Quanzhou for 4 nights. Unfortunately, I had an accident and broke my ankle before I got to the hotel. After dinner, I noticed that my ankle and foot was totally swollen, so I asked the hotel to call an ambulance to take me to a nearby full service hospital. A night shift manager (Mr Tang) accompanied me to the hospital and helped me with the necessary paperwork and processes. He stayed with me past midnight until I got to talk to the orthopedic doctor who showed me my xrays and CT and explained to me regarding my condition. He then took me back to the hotel in a cab and bought me a pair of crutches. They even went back to the hospital to pick up my report and Xrays the next day. Every night, another night shift manager (Mr Zu) would bring ice to my room and check on me. Some staff member would wheel me down to breakfast and dinner every day. Such care and consideration is above and beyond my expectations, even for a 5 star hotel. I have traveled the world and stayed at many 5 star hotels. I would say that the service and hospitality at Intercontinental Quanzhou, China is the best I have experienced so far. Their breakfast and dinner buffet were also fantastic! The seafood was so fresh and you won’t get tired eating there every day as there are so many varieties to choose from. I would definitely highly recommend Intercontinental Quanzhou if you need a hotel in...

I recently had the pleasure of staying at Intercontinental Quanzhou, and I must say, the entire experience was nothing short of exceptional. From the moment I arrived, the service was impeccable. The staff, Lucus greeted me with warmth and professionalism, making me feel instantly at home. Check-in was seamless, and they even offered a toy doll to my daughter, which was a thoughtful touch. The room was spacious, immaculate, and well-appointed, with all the amenities I could possibly need. The bed was incredibly comfortable, ensuring a great night's sleep. What really stood out, though, was the attention to detail. Every part of the hotel, from the lobby to the dining area, exuded elegance and care. The breakfast were also fantastic. The varieties of foods were huge and the food was delicious,Throughout my stay, the concierge team provided excellent recommendations for local attractions, and the housekeeping staff kept the room in pristine condition.
