Great Tang Hotel — Hotel in Shanghai

This is 5-star hotel by local standards, but it is horrible, I wouldn't give it even 1-star. The A/C didn't work, so the room was around 30C during our stay. One wing of the hotel was closed when we were there. Our hotel room door had a broken frame; several tiles in the room were chipped; carpet were old and heavily stained; washroom was dirty and took a long time for the hot water for shower. Breakfast was bad and the cooks were making fun of people, because everyone just wanted to eat and leave. Some chairs in the breakfast area were broken, but they had covers on them, so you wouldn't know until you sat on them. Some other traveler reported mold that would explain why some local would not stay...

Stayed here one night on a 7 day shanghai region shopping tour. The trip was free including airfare, so we couldn't really complain about the standard. This building is grand in concept and if you have bad eyesight and cannot smell the mildew and mold, you might even think it is a beautiful place. But beware - they have a problem with their plumbing fixtures and the mold is seriously bad for your health so don't stay here if you have any choice! We did not have a problem with their a/c as it was working, room wifi did not work for me. Breakfast was not memorable, so probably not...
