The Hu Hua International Hotel is NOT an international hotel and is NOT suitable for foreigners. For full disclosure, I am a white Caucasian who knows some very basic Mandarin Chinese. I stayed at this hotel over a four day period all by myself while I was here in Shanghai on business, and this is my personal observation and assessment of the hotel.||||This is basically a local hotel for Chinese locals to stay at. The staff basically do NOT know English and will only talk with you in Mandarin Chinese. If you do not know Chinese, you will NOT be able to communicate with the staff. Even if you find that one or two staff member that can speak a word of English, that person will still try to talk with you in Mandarin Chinese and purposely not utter a word of English to annoy you. ||||Other than this language barrier, the staff are also NOT friendly. They are NOT willing to help guests and feel annoyed whenever a guest comes by the reception desk for help. They will ridicule you and belittle you for your poor Mandarin speaking skills. Sometimes, they will even correct your pronunciation in a rude way, which I find very annoying. Do NOT ever ask the staff to bring up anything extra, as they will say "we've already put that item in your room already. That is all you get." ||||The room attendants, floor housekeeping attendants, maintenance workers, and restaurant cleaning staff will sneer at non- Chinese guests in a rude, discriminatory way. They sometimes talk behind your back. They seem to have very good communication between one staff member and another and will try to gang up on guests who they feel are weird (meaning not a local Chinese guest). ||||The housekeeping staff do not do a good job of keeping the hotel clean, as I can easily find crumbs and dirt on the hallway carpet. The carpet in the guest rooms is filled with stains. There are some insects, bugs, mosquitoes, etc that fly throughout the bedroom and bathroom. The toilet has very low water pressure and gets clogged very easily. The shower door does not close too tightly, which results in water spewing all over the bathroom floor. ||||The hotel does not have the basic amenities that are expected in an American hotel, such as valet parking, gym, swimming pool, etc. ||||I will definitely NOT recommend this hotel to anyone, especially non-...

This hotel is not an 'international' hotel. The only people staying there were from the mainland. No westerners. The staff cannot speak English and are just cold as ice. The hotel needs to invest in staff/personality training. Quite frankly they were just rude. Breakfasts were not geared towards international tourists as there is really only 'Eggs on Toast' for those that do not like Chinese food in the morning. I only stayed there as I had to deal with the University up the street, but other than that would not have stayed there ad will not return. Having said that the rooms are quite large and relatively clean. TV only has Chinese channels. WIFI was hopeless though. There is not much choice of international hotel around this areas as there is a lot of road construction going on as it is located to the southwest of the city in the outer suburbs. There is a coffee shop next door and the only bar (Highland Bar) with some western food and beer is across the street, which ended up being a sanctuary for me for the entire week...

Rooms are very clean and spacious. One of the best parts for me is the food in this hotel. You have many choices for breakfast at the downstair restaurant. On the second floor, there is also a restaurant , where you can have reasonable and big portion foods. The 18 RMB noodle is good enough for at least three persons to share with (you can check and order dishes from lovely pictures they hand on the wall at the downstairs and then have a seat on the second floor). They also provide free small salad bar before you go for normal dinner. The staff both in the restaurant and front desk are extremely friendly...
