I made it back to the Hyatt Regency Global Harbor after six years. I’d still recommend staying here, but with certain caveats.||My brother and I stayed for nine nights this time in two rooms this time around. Check in was relatively smooth, albeit neither room was available until at or after check in time. My room was upgraded with my Globalist status, while my brother’s was not. Suite availability is a lot less frequent now, as the occupancy rate seems higher now. ||Still good: housekeeping is friendly, efficient and flexible. The front desk calls if they notice that you haven’t had service and will provide accordingly. The mall next door seems to have an even greater selection of shops and restaurants now, and is particularly family friendly. (It is (or was) the biggest shopping center in Shanghai.) More of a local/domestic customer base so plan accordingly. The hotel has easy access to the rest of Shanghai by metro through three lines nearby.||Less good: Staff English level is generally not as good as previously. This is fine since the majority of guests were Chinese from what I saw. But international travelers should be aware of this. Regency Club no longer serves breakfast, which is offered in the café downstairs. They do have the cocktail hour, which sees the lounge swamped although patrons seem to hit it and quit it instead of camping. A decent selection of snacks including local dishes, which one could make a meal out of (and many people did). Hotel uses central air conditioning, so it was a sweltering 80 degrees in my room at pretty much all times (when it was occasionally in the high 70s outside). I did not notice last trip since I visited...
Read moreAs a loyal Hyatt guest, having stayed at over 12 Hyatt properties (including 6 Hyatt Regencies), I had higher expectations for the Hyatt Regency Shanghai Global Harbour, but unfortunately, it fell short in multiple areas.||First, the positives:|✔ Great email communication before our stay—every question we had was answered thoroughly.|✔ Gym was nice and well-equipped.|✔ Location-wise, while it’s a bit far from the Bund and Pudong Airport, it is close to Circus World and Xintiandi.||Now, the disappointments:|✖ Does not really cater to international travelers—outside of the front desk staff, English proficiency was very low, making communication difficult.|✖ Room had a lingering smell of smoke despite being non-smoking.|✖ Breakfast was repetitive—not a single item changed in the four days we were there.|✖ Regency Club was poorly managed—food and even plates weren’t replenished, and many things ran out.|✖ Service felt impersonal—we left a note mentioning two birthdays in our party, and there was no acknowledgment. Not a huge deal, but Hyatt properties usually go the extra mile.|✖ Overall experience ranked last among the Hyatts I’ve stayed at—even the Xiamen Hyatt Regency (a lower category hotel) outperformed this one in every way.||With so many hotel options in Shanghai, I wouldn’t stay here again. If you’re an international traveler expecting a polished Hyatt experience, you may want to...
Read moreBusiness Hotel or Party Hotel???
After a long day travelling and working in our Shanghai office, this answer was answered to me last night! It turned out that this hotel is a PARTY hotel and they don’t care at all about the business people who simply want to catch some sleep. People in the neighbouring room were partying until late at night - I called the reception 3 times to remind the party crowd to be more considerate of the people around them. Obviously it didn’t work. The hotel staff simply told me that they can not do anything about it and their solution to the problem was that I should pack all my stuff and move to a different room. WOW - what a great idea. Moving to person away from the actual problem. This HYATT is badly managed and they clearly have no sense of what it means to operate a hotel in this kind of category.
For everyone who considers choosing this hotel I can only give you the advice: better stay away from...
