ZTE Hotel Shanghai — Hotel in Shanghai

Was in town for a trade show at SINEC and its a good hotel for that purpose, 20 RMB cab each way. Hotel is nice enough for the price. Decent buffet breakfast if you are ok with eggs and toast and fruit, the rest is pure chinese breakfast food. Room was large with very comfortable bed. AC quiet and cold. Room also quiet at all hours save for some occasional loud guest in always, not a big deal. At least one person at the front desk spoke decent english. Metro is near, 711 is near, but not many restaurants are near, so do your dining elsewhere. Maid service was good. Rooms were clean but carpet seemed dated and needed replacing.||||So the lack of two stars is for one reason only: either the building has been heavily smoked in and/or people were smoking in the building. I have no idea if that's permitted, but no ashtays in my room and never saw anyone smoking in the lobby. Therefore, I have no explanation for the overwhelming smokeyness in the air near bedtime. Very irritating, literally. Sneezing and watery eyes. All around unpleasant to fall asleep to.||||Not sure what can be done with that. If you're ok with smoke smell, by all means this is a good value hotel. Near nothing but has a metro stop within 5 minutes to get you anywhere.||||If smoke smell is an issue, either avoid this place or take your chances in that my experience is a random bad few nights. ||||Its too bad, this is a nice place for the price but need to sleep with quality air,...

Ok, the fact that there is a construction site 100 meters outside the hotel (where equipment is started daily at 6 am, also on weekends) probably is not the hotel's fault. Everything else is: cleanliness is limited, the internet connection was very unstable, the faucet in one of the bathrooms was mounted so that the water drops on the edge of the water basin (creating a mess every time you wash your hands), breakfast was not ready once at 7 (when it officially opens), and the breakfast room was standing room only on weekends, because it is designed to hold the weekday crowd (which spends 10 minutes or so in the breakfast room, and not 30 minutes or so during the weekends). I am very much used to Chinese hotels all over the country, and I am flexible, but the week we spent here was not enjoyable. And the hotel is not cheap.
