We are three days away from escaping this hotel of horrors and counting down every moment before leaving. It is more comfortable to be absolutely anywhere than in the room so we try to avoid it at all costs, returning only when we are too exhausted to care about the rooms faults anymore. Other rooms may not be as treacherous as ours, so my warning is to avoid room 635 under all circumstances. ||||Hotel from the outside looks pleasant enough, check in easy, reception efficient, hotel corridors look promising, then we open the door to room 635... a bad smell hits us like a punch in the face, not just bad, appalling, something like old cigarettes, death, damp and despair. We recoil in horror, then turn on the extraction fan and leave the room door wide open to try and air out the room. One week has gone by and after trying with our best efforts we have realised that airing out the room is impossible under all circumstances, it's a smell that only a bulldozer would fix I'm sure. ||||We are not alone however, baby cockroaches crawl out from the unsealed drain in the bathroom sink and greet us every morning and evening.||||||Just today we decided to investigate a high pitched squeaking noise that we hear from time to time. Our air conditioning unit is quite noisy and squeaks (it does not help to circulate air and get rid of the smell unfortunately) so this mystery of the squeal remains unsolved. However, while investigating my assistant investigator made the mistake of looking under the bed, expecting to find mouse droppings he found something that we are not sure if it is worse, or better... 1 inch thick of dust (but still not enough dust to justify this foul odour) and laying upon the dust were copious amounts of condom wrappers. There is a sign on the first floor stating that you can rent a room for 3 hours at 80RMB. We feel quite sure that room must be 635 and perhaps it is the cleaners procedure to sweep the wrappers under the bed. I'm now quite confident that simply from sleeping in the bed (which is exceptionally comfortable for China hotels by the way) I may have caught something infectious. The stains on the wall are also looking more suspicious than ever.||||That's the worst of the worst, the rest can be summarised as follows:||||- Breakfast is simple, Chinese (of course) and unchanging daily. Very little meat, lots of carbohydrates, this is a hotel where they consider peanut butter a condiment for noodles rather than a spread for bread.||||- Location is far from the city centre, 10 mins to Tang Lang subway station however.||||- Wifi is enough for sending messages, but unsuitable for watching anything or making calls.||||-Staff pleasant and eager to please, cannot speak any English, but we are far from the city centre so that's to be expected in China, cleaning lady is friendly enough but not at all thorough. She will clean around possessions and does not replenish the water daily but...

Read moreA great location for Shenzhen University. The room is quite nice and if it's facing away from the main street, it's very quiet. Also, you get to see and hear how the elementary school is in the morning (around 7–8am). The problem is the piping for the sink in the bathroom. They have not properly installed it to prevent the smell. I stayed in two rooms and both of them were quite challenging for using their bathrooms. If you prefer to stay in a hotel where they have installed proper pipes for the bathrooms, I would not stay in this hotel but things could be improved very quickly in Shenzhen. So, when you book, make sure to ask if they still use a metal hose or a pipe for the draining water in the sink. If metal hose, it will smell and if a pipe, it should be ready to go! The hotel staff speaks no English but you will communicate with them through translation app on their smart phones. The usual procedure in...
