The shower in the room did not drain properly and would leak in the floor within a few minutes of turning on the water. the towels covering the floor when I checked in looking like the room had been used was the first red flag. The housekeepers cleaned the room but it had a strange smell afterwards. There were no cups in the room to make any tea so I was thankful I had brought one and my own tea because there wasn't even one left after the room was cleaned.
The restaurant staff were friendly at first until spoken too. Being able to say "hello" or "you like coffee?" is not enough communication. When I had a question, the woman server got a stricken look on her face and the all but ran away. she spoke zero english and went to go get someone else to "help" but chose to get someone who also spoke zero english. (This woman she got looked like a manager) they then proceeded to tell me "i don't speak english" while nervously staring at me and looking like they wanted me to either give up or just leave because they said "I don't speak english". This wasted a lot of the limited time I had in the morning. after having to resort to a translator because they seemed to not "understand" my chinese, here came a person who spoke a little bit of english to "help" but far too late. A bit more communication ability and understanding to get the right person to help if they cannot would be greatly appreciated. This is why after that, I only came again on the checkout day and very briefly.
Having to take extremely brief showers or spend a lot of time cleaning up the water in the floor afterwards really ruined the experience. The staff wasting my time and getting someone who could not understand to "help" just added to the overall dissatisfaction. I know I will eventually have to stay again for work, as this is a place chosen by my company. but I would definately not recommend it to anyone as it is just not living up to the reputation it is supposed to have. As a first time guest, if I wasn't needing to return due to work, it would have been my only visit. I just can hope that there will be some noticable improvements eventually but I will not...
Read moreI stayed two nights and was really surprised about quite some features which should not be at all standard - at least not based on my last twenty plus years experience traveling in CN and Asia. I have never experienced tables in a Shangri-La lobby fully of cigarette butts not been cleaned for hours - the same was valid for the ash trays next to the elevators which at least have not been cleaned between my arrival and my departure (1.5 days). Service in the breakfast restaurant was also not high end - neither was the service in the gym. Maybe the hotel is overloaded or overwhelmed by tourist groups during that period in the year. As a business traveller, I would even not grant the hotel a Traders grade - it is really a put as so far I had many good experiences with Shangri-La Group all over China and in Singapore as well. Management may have to reassess the entire value...
