Jinhuayue International Hotel — Hotel in Zhongshan

Hotel is an about 10 min drive from the Zhongshan Ferry Terminal. ||||Rooms are quite large, the bathroom has a walk-in shower.||||Beds are reasonable soft and comfortable. ||||Everything was quite dirty and worn. The hotel appeared to be 20+ years old. The carpet seems to have been not vacuumed once, since they put it in.||||Internet is Wifi based and quite slow. VPN, Skype and Facetime worked, but not very well or stable.||||Electric plugs are next to the bed, but difficult to reach. They take Chinese and EU plugs.||||TV had no English channels, not even CCTV News. ||||Breakfast was simple, I only saw toast and butter that could be classified as western style. Service was non-existing in the restaurant and no knives were available. Lesson learned: you can spread butter with chopsticks. ||||The price is quite low, hence I still gave an average rating. The good thing is the proximity to the Ferry Station. But...

Pretty depressing hotel for westerners to stay at. None of the staff I encountered spoke any English. I booked a room without breakfast as that was all that was available. Instead of being able to charge it to my room, I had to go to reception to pay for it in advance every morning. (Apparently this was not the case for my Chinese companion who was able to charge it to his room) Not much western food at breakfast; Toast, cereal, omelette was about it. Other guests would openly stare at me in the corridors and lifts like they had never seen an English person before. The ceiling in my room had several patches of mould where there had previously been leaks. On the plus side, the room was big, the bathrooms (I had two in my room!) were nice and the air con worked well...

Stayed here a few times on business because our local partner helped us to get a good rate. The building in terrible and drab, but acceptable for the price. The problem is the staff is almost openly hostile to guests - especially foreigners. I have never felt so un welcomed in a place in my whole life. The night before I was to check out they locked the refrigerator (I guess they were afraid I would take the 2 dollars worth of items) with my stuff in the refrigerator. I will...
