We actually stayed in town during our visit to Cano Cristales but that was a mistake. The town has very little to offer for tourists. Not many restaurants serve dinners around 6 pm. I couldn’t find a tourist office to book the tours so we ended up booking all the tour at our lodge anyway. Had I knew about this beforehand, we would not have stayed in a lodge in town. Makalombia is a lovely lodge with nice ground, good service and decent price. Cano Cristales boat landing is directly across the river from it. One morning, my husband and I were birdwatching on the road leading to Makalombia and we lost track of time. Before we knew it, it was 11 am and we were hot, thirsty and hungry. Fortunately Makalombia is nearby and we decided to try our luck there. The owner Ms. Luz is so kind and welcoming. She immediately offered us coffee, water and WiFi so we could communicate using Google Translate, and allowed us to have lunch there as non-guests. The lunch was lovely, probably the best we had in the region, with great services provided by the kitchen staff. After lunch, Ms Luz offered us a tour of the property which was amazing with nice grounds. We were told that three or four different types of monkeys frequent the lodge daily, morning and late afternoon, and many birds visit as well. Unfortunately, we toured it in the middle of the day so not much activity for the wildlife then. We still saw a few beautiful birds and a bat. If I ever return to this area, I will stay at Makalombia with...
Read moreThese are extremely primitive cabins in the woods. The screens on the windows were torn, allowing bugs and mosquitos in. Only one of the four beds had mosquito netting. The hotel operators did come fix the screens and install mosquito netting once we asked them to. But there are still gaps between the walls and the roof that allow insects and rain in. There is no hot water. Frogs jumped out of the toilet. We found a rat upstairs, and rat droppings on the beds and floor. The hotel operator came to try to catch the rat with a Tupperware. We left after that and went to another hotel. I do NOT...
Gracias...
