Colombia is a place I never imagined I would travel to. As an American who doesn’t speak Spanish (yet) it seemed like a place that was closed off to me. Life gave me the opportunity to not only visit an amazing country, but to have an adventure at Boutu, something I am incredibly grateful for. I don’t know if I have the words to convey all of my gratitude.
Our stay was truly an adventure. We were picked up at the dock in Puerto Asis and journeyed along the river for an hour and a half to reach the property. The boat ride transported us to a lush, beautiful jungle filled with the sounds of birds and monkeys and frogs and bugs, such an amazing chorus of noises to lull us to sleep.
We awoke to a day filled with amazing activities; a gentle, quiet boat ride to try to spot the pink river dolphins and see all the colorful birds and monkeys and turtles, a hike through the grounds of Boutu where we learned about the land, spotted animals and munched on sugar cane, we fished and ate what we caught. I was relaxed and amazed and filled with wonder at what I was so lucky to be experiencing.
Waiting on the river to spot the dolphins is a real meditation on being present. Sitting still in the boat. Watching the water. Looking for the signs of the elusive and rare pink river dolphin. And the joy of seeing it; the spirit of the river. Our hearts felt so full knowing we were experiencing something so special.
As amazing as the pink river dolphins are, the real treat is Jose and Jenny who run Boutu. A father and daughter team; they are the heart of the trip. Their warmth, and joy, and excitement, and care and knowledge and love permeates everything. I feel like a better person for having spent time with them, like my life has been opened in ways I could not have expected before having been to Boutu. I felt such a sense of connection, to them, to the land, to the people of the land, to nature and to the spirit that runs through it all.
I look forward to returning...
