El Gecko Tours & Hotel — Hotel in Paquera

Not going to lie, the rooms aren't the greatest. Read their website description.

The rooms don't have AC (just a wall mounted fan), so it was very hot and humid. Also, a couple of the rooms have shared bathrooms, kitchenettes, and showers. This would make for a really nice hostel, but not a hotel as name suggests. Again, this was all in the website description though, so I'm not knocking them any stars for these aspects.

The decrease in stars comes from the rooms. First, they put a screen on the windows to keep bugs out, but the door is just slats of wood loosely nailed together which is so full of holes it resembles a very loose screen itself. These obviously let in as many bugs wanted a free snack that night. And that doesn't mention the holes in the walls that had a colony of ants pouring through it. I am an avid backpacker and am used to sleeping in nature, so it means something when I say I've literally never had so many ants on me at one time as I did sleeping that night and constantly waking up to pick them off.

Another issue with the room was the wooden slat window (not glass) with absolutely no curtains. It opens outwards into the common area, and the only way to shut it is by going outside and closing it. Which isn't horrible but is super annoying to do. Worse though is that window also happens to be the one and only source of airflow into your room (remember no AC so that's the only thing that can help you cool off). What this fun arrangement means is you can either have your window closed and boil in your skin but have some privacy, or you can leave the window open and show off to all the other guests walking by (window opens into main walking hall area), but not be boiled like a lobster. My girlfriend and I eventually decided on the voyeristic approach so we could get some sleep. This could be easily solved with a pair of curtains which did not exist.

I gave back a star though because the host is extremely nice and super helpful. I would love to give her a wonderful review to help out her small business, but just couldn't justify it with how bad the room was.

El Gecko is a beautiful small, cozy and family hotel. It is located at the end of the town in the middle of coconut palms and a papaya plantage. A supermarket is near by and you can reach it by foot in about 15mins. The whole hotel (rooms, bathrooms and shared kitchen) is very clean and you can enjoy your cooked food on the balkony with a view to the jungle. They have really cozy chill areas in front of every room, so that you can also enjoy your freetime there. The 3 dogs, 2 parrots and chicken are also part of the amazing charme of this place. The owners and staff here are amazingly friendly and helpful and we felt very welcome and home here. We also did the bioluminescent water kayaking tour which was amzing and megical. It wasn't with a tours-company but with a very nice friend of the owner so that we had a private tour and got to know a lot about Paqueras history and places by a local. All in all it was an...

Wir waren für 2 Nächte im El Gecko Hotel. Nachdem man über einen kleinen Schotterweg gefahren ist, biegt man durch ein altes Tor in eine sehr schöne kleine Hotelanlage ein. Das Hotel ist familiengeführt und die Gastgeberin ist sehr nett und hilfsbereit. Sie spricht deutsch, was das Hotel grade für deutschsprachige Gäste sicher sehr attraktiv macht.

Wir konnten während unseres Aufenthalts in der Anlage mehrere Tiere beobachten, z.B. Iguanas, Vögel, Brüllaffen, etc. Ein absolutes Highlight ist, dass sich wohl regelmäßig die großen roten Aras auf einem Baum in der Anlage aufhalten. Auch diese konnten wir beobachten, das war grandios!

Das Essen (Frühstück und Abendessen), was frisch von der Gastgeberin selbst zubereitet wird, war sehr lecker. Bisher auf unserer Costa-Rica-Reise geschmacklich das Beste, was wir gegessen haben. Und auch nicht zu teuer.

Man kann für das Zimmer einen Stern abziehen. Es ist sehr klein und hat keine Klimaanlage. Dafür einen gut funktionieren Ventilator. Wir haben keine Klimaanlage benötigt, da wir uns tagsüber nicht im Zimmer aufgehalten haben. Nachts war es angenehm kühl, wir haben sogar die Wolldecke benutzt.

Leider hatten wir auch keine warme Dusche, aber die Temperatur ging gerade noch so. Auch sind die Zimmer sehr hellhörig. Man hört also Nachbarn und Tiere nachts.

ABER: Ehrlich gesagt kann man für den geringen Preis, den eine Nacht hier kostet, auch keinen Luxus erwarten. Deswegen kein Stern Abzug.

Die Sauberkeit des Zimmers war zufriedenstellend. Es gibt außerdem eine Gemeinschaftsküche mit Kühlschrank, Mikrowelle und Herd.

Wir haben auch die beiden Touren, die hier angeboten werden, mitgemacht. Tortuga-Island und Bioluminisenz). Die waren beide gut, grade die Bioluminisenz-Tour auf dem Kajak war auf jeden Fall ihr Geld wert! Leider haben die Guides auf den Touren nur spanisch gesprochen.

Insgesamt können wir das Hotel El Gecko weiterempfehlen, vor allem für deutschsprachige Gäste dürfte es sehr attraktiv sein, da die Gastgeberin sehr gut deutsch spricht. Man sollte kein Problem mit Hunden haben. Die Haushunde kommen gerne mal an und wollen...
