Serendipity found this place for us due to a chance encounter with another traveler who'd been in the Ojochal area south of Uvita. You have to drive a ways in on a dirt road and then get to a steep driveway that takes you up to the property. The building itself is a pretty structure with about 10 double rooms. Each room has its own entrance to the rear veranda. The rooms are getting dated and we had to move from a better room to a smaller one in order to get a bed we could sleep on. The first one had springs about to poke out. Like many Costa Rica properties, the showers in this facility have little electric heaters at the top that produce variable heated water, but the second one did work. The one in the first room did not. Room cleaning is indifferent, possibly the result of only one person managing the place and much to do to keep it up. Breakfast is offered, but we chose only coffee and had our own rolls and cereal. Guests can keep some items in a refrigerator there. The entrance to the building has a hall from front to back and a cramped kitchen next to that, so one can make toast, etc. Dish cleaning is also indifferent and the kitchen is not very clean as well. So, one has to cope with those shortcomings. What makes this property special is the outside extended veranda that is quite pleasant, a small but nice pool and beautiful grounds with a spectacular ocean view of the coast about a mile away. Sunsets are amazing from there. This has to be one of the best locations in Ojochal. Parking is minimal at the property so there can be some difficulties in that regard. Also Ojochal has very loud crickets at least in March - a problem shared by Uvita as well. These are very loud, even deafening, especially at night. At El Perezoso, however, due to its elevation, cricket noises are not bad at all. The elevation also allows for breezes that make sleeping much better than it otherwise would be as there is no air conditioning. You have to be careful with open windows and doors, however, due to the many insects that can get in. Privacy is not optimal due to the windows in the rooms and how they all open onto a common veranda. Ideally, a single group would take over the place and this does happen there. So this a great place for a family gathering. Like many Costa Rica places, there is some bad and some good, but the good here does make it a worthwhile place and we'd certainly...
Read moreMy sisters and my parents have all stayed in this lovely retreat of a b&b during trips to Costa Rica, and last year my husband and I finally had the chance to enjoy this wonderful place.||||I studied in Costa Rica during college and had the chance to travel and see quite a bit of the country then, but mainly on the beaten path. The Hotel El Perezoso is in an incredible part of the county that is undisturbed by mass tourism. The hotel itself seems like it is usually found by word of mouth. There was only one other couple there during our stay. We called to book our stay, but I think they were updating the website at the time.||||The best way to enjoy the area is to have a car. We spent most of our time hanging out on the Tortuga Beach (the closest - about 1.5 miles) or Ventana Beach (2.5 miles away with some cool caves). But this whole part of the coast is dotted of little beaches that you can have all to yourself on most days of the week. || ||Terry, the owner, provided great recommendations for places for dinner and drinks in the village at night. For being a sleepy, little village it has a good mix of cuisine to pick from, reflecting the mix of Tico and European ex-pat folks who live there. Our favorite was Citrus, a nicer fine...
Read moreWe've been traveling all over CR yearly since 1997, and El Perezoso is by far our favorite place. We return each trip, and have cut short visits to the Osa and other spots to get back there ASAP! I could go on and on about how beautiful it is, how spotlessly clean and comfortable the rooms, how spectacular the views, how friendly, helpful and accomodating the people...||The location, on a hill overlooking the Pacific, gets lovely cool breezes. No problems with insects (and I'm always the one who attracts them!) so we left our windows and door open all night, listening to the faint sound of the waves and waking to the songs of the many birds and occasional monkeys. ||The area has everything you could want, from deserted beaches and waterfalls, horseback riding, sea kayaking and surfing to gourmet (yet amazingly inexpensive) restaurants. Watching the sun set over the ocean from the pool with a glass of wine-- just doesn't get better than that!||I'm so happy we found El Perezoso, and can't wait til February...
