We have traveled in Costa Rica for many years seeking out interesting places. For years I have recommended the Osa as a place for inquiring minds to explore. We have visited a number of times over the years but nothing quite like this. ||First, I want to assuage any travelers doubts about access to the Finca. Yes it IS DEEP in the primary forest, yes it is PLUMB center of the Osa "hills", yes the drive LOOKS impenetrable, yes it is an UNLIKELY place to find one of the most interesting characters of the Osa - Filip and his family.||Driving from Uvita (a good interim point to the Osa) takes about 3 hours - the last off-road bit is solid almost pothole free and easily doable in a small 4WD. Travel in the MORNINGS in these parts of the planet avoids afternoon rains. The Finca is mostly primary forest comprising a couple of hundred acres abutting the Corcovado National Park and this is a huge benefit - you are essentially inside the park without the current park visiting cost.||There's about a weeks worth of trails cut into the forest - it is a place for hikers, explorers and birders . . . it is NOT a place for people with bad knees or breathing problems . . . The trails are very well cut but some can be steep and tough. There are also a couple of easy hikes or you can lounge around the lodge and watch anteasters (this specie is called the Tamadua) saunter across the lawn or watch large birds of prey spiralling above you. We found Tapir tracks near the lodge trail but didn't see one. You can do the trails guided or unguided . . . an unexpected additional money saver this deep in the jungle.||Your host family is truly delightful! Dinners are unique and strangely marvelous - I say that because many jungle lodges are very simple in the food department. Every night at the Finca Sueno you will get some unique speciality - just unexpected is my thought. Ours was really good indeed.||Finally, when I travel I want to learn something and Filip is a treasuer trove of knowledge both of the area and of Costa Rica. You will learn more about the Osa in one night with Filip than a month at other lodges if you have that interest. Your appreciation for the place and for the Osa can only grow once you understand something about it.||I should add one proviso, the 2 cabins are pretty rustic - so be prepared. Filip will likely build a couple more soon. Also I do advise buying a pair of rubber boots for a few bucks before you leave civilization or you will be ankle deep in mud from time to time (this was rainy season after all). ||Best wishes from Alajuela! Thanks for...
Read moreI only stayed one night, and I wish it could have been longer. This place has a rare kind of magic—you feel the jungle all around you, raw and alive, and at the same time you’re safe and welcomed like family. The cabins are basic but comfortable and I slept well. I went on a four-hour guided adventure with Nielcy’s son, hiking the finca’s trails through forest of every shade of green. Some of the miles and miles of paths available to walk the property were easy, others more challenging, and along the way I stood in awe before the giant Matapalo and Ceibo trees, magnificient marvels of the natural world. The food was delicious, and they even prepared a vegetarian version of the meal for me. Sharing it at the table with the family and listening to Filip's stories made the stay...
Read moreWe have been here for two days in October 2022. Filip, and his wife, gave us very warm hospitality. It is a great place if you want to experience nature at it's best. Filip & his wife are great cooks, and having the meals with them, is part of the journey.
It is an empowering experience to shower in the open roof shower, and feel the rain as you go. (When we visited, there was only the possibility of cold water)
Filip opened lots of trails in his property, and it is the closest to wild walk you will get
Nature is amazing, we saw birds, monkeys, and huge trees
Make sure you talk with Filip directly before you drive there, and follow his explanations. The road can be very challenging, especially in the wet season.
Overall that was one of our best experiences...
