I am actually kind of reluctant to write this review because I don't want a lot of people showing up here! But, this place is truly a gem on the Peninsula de Osa. Lodging in Osa is usually of two extremes: rough tent cabins for conservation volunteers or ridiculously expensive luxury resorts that take all the fun out of visiting such a wild place. Hacienda Rio Oro does it right. The cost is reasonable and the comfortable cabins are airy and spotless. My wife and I were surprised at how well appointed and clean everything was and with the large screened in windows you felt like you were a part of the beautiful nature all around. The kitchen, run by doña Flor, is amazing. The food is fresh, traditional, and flexible. She had no problem making vegan meals for us and always kept it homemade and local: palmito, fresh tortillas, and even fresh roscillas! (IYKYK!) The location is perfect for visiting La Leona station and I cannot recommend this place enough. We are definitely returning, if for no other reason than to eat more of doña Flor's food! In a nutshell, if you want to visit the Osa Peninsula and Hacienda Rio Oro has a room available, book it! There is no better value anywhere in the area. Thanks to Flor and Mónica for providing us with a great way to visit one of the most beautiful...

OMG. Where do I start. Right off the bat, the host requested DOUBLE the rate they posted on AirBnB. They use AirBnB platform to lure unsuspecting guests and then jack up the rate and demand CASH. Secondly, the place is actually primitive CAMPING - you sleep in a tent, next to a cow farm, an hour away from Puerto Himenez - going basically off-road, water crossing 2 actual rivers and 3 smaller creeks. If any of those swell up due to a rainstorm somewhere, you’ll be stuck, even in a 4x4. The only destination that way worth visiting is Matapalo beach, which is an amazing surf spot, and even that is just half way to this Hacienda del Rio Oro. Once you get there, and realize this is camping at the requested price of a 5-star lodge, it may be too late to turn back. No A/C, electric outlets, fan or TV. There’s literally one light bulb per cabin, bugs completely permeate the place. And oh yeah there’s snakes, so watch your step as you stumble toward a bathroom at night. I’ve been to over dozen AirBnB places in Costa Rica, this one is so bad it should be delisted for knowingly misinforming guests and demanding cash payments at TWICE the advertised and already paid for rate. BEWARNED, this...
Read moreOf all the places that I have travelled to this is the most magical place I have ever seen. A simple walk down the road allowed me to experience wildlife that is only in national geographic. This doesn’t truly reflect the access to the lagoon or the beach which is spectacular. We waited at sunset with a cocktail in hand for the green spark of the set in sun from a comfortable seat on a deck above a pristine jungle with at least 3 different kinds of monkeys cavorting through the canopy at our feet. As the days got hot (the whole point of being there) I shucked off all of my clothes and descended into the plunge pool which is an experience you have to try to understand just how thrilling it is and that term understates the true experience. This resort will be an experience like nothing you have experienced. I highly recommend...
