La Leona Eco Lodge is located between Playa Carate and one of the main entrances to Corcovado National Park. The name La Leona - meaning Lioness or female lion - is derived from the ancient assumption by locals that the Puma, which is widely found in the area, was a female lion. La Leona is owned by Walter and Salma a Costa Rican couple from Santa Teresa who started the place in 2000. There are 19 cabins, one open dinning and bar area overlooking the sea and a restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. The cabins are organized in three levels - seafront cabins (1 to 10) shared cabins (14 to 18) and mountain range cabins (19 to 24). Seafront and mountain range cabins feature their own toilets and shower, while shared cabins (14 - 18) have access to a shared shower area and toilets. We stayed in cabin 19 and had to walk for about 8 minutes up the hill to arrive to our cabin. Upon arriving to Carate we stopped at Leona Base Camp which is 3.9k to the lodge. We drove past the airport to the starting point of Rio Carate (which serves as the end of the road for motorized vehicles). From that points onwards we had to complete a 2.5K trek through a jungle trial - thirty minute walk at a normal pace - to get the La Leona. Las Leona trial is one of the three entrances to Corcovado National Park. La Leona Eco Lodge can provide bag transport services for those requiring assistance. Upon arriving we were greeted by Joel, a friendly manager who showed the configuration of the place including the general safety and house guidelines. These guidelines include: no Wi-Fi access across the property, no power in the cabins / lodges (power plugs are available in main reception ares), no food to be stored in the cabins / lodges, electricity available only between 9AM - 1PM to 5.30PM - 9.00PM. The guidelines might be considered strict at first, but it become the norm once we spent 24 hours in the surroundings and realize the remoteness of the place. For those needing Wi-Fi access the closest point is Lookout Point Hotel opposite to the public beach before the airport. If is a good 45 minute walk each way. Once we climbed the path we arrived to cabin 19 which was nestled in the middle of the jungle and featured a small balcony overlooking the jungle. The cabin was made of a wooden frame as a thick zippable plastic laced mosquito netting that served as the doors and windows of the cabn. The flooring is covered in plastic and the ceiling as well. The room featured three wodeen single beds and a simple wooden unit for clothes. The beds featured a single sheet which was enough during summer given the humidity and heat in the air. Upon opening the back zipper, a large area marked by a fence made of mosquito netting was revealed. The area featured a man made shower and basin made out of rocks; as well as a toilet and sink. The water from the shower is sourced from a local river and it is cold - a very welcome feature given the heat during most of the year. It is an amazing feature that brings home the fact that you are sleeping and showing amongst wildlife in the Costa Rican jungle. The overall vibe of La Leona Eco is very relaxed and friendly. The hammocks by the sea and large bar overlooking the sea serve as gathering points and relaxation points. La Leona Eco Lodge offers walking guided tours into Corcovado National Park as well as a self-guided trial accessible only by guests providing a glimpse of the permanent forest in Corcovado. The guided walking tour covering the La Leona trial has a cost of 45 USD, extends for six kilometers each way and lasts close to four hours. I would highly recommend Milton, a very friendly, knowledge and bilingual tour guide that taught us not only about Corcovado but Costa Rica. Areas for La Leona Eco Lodge to improve and for potential guests to be aware of. 1. Value for money for lunch and dinner. At $20 USD a meal per person the portion sizes are small. Lower the cost to $15 USD and if becomes value.

I would recommend that you read up about this place to see if it's for you, but I wish that I had stayed longer (and brought a surfboard). Excellent food, extremely friendly and professional staff, amazing scenery, and a great place to relax. The outdoor shower was fantastic (and private), whilst the beds were very comfortable. No electricity in the rooms made for a shift of routine to the sun, but they got pretty hot during the day! Saw toucans, makaws, monkeys, sloths, etc, and swam/body surfed every evening to a stunning sunset.

This is an excellent place to add to your trip to Costa Rica! Take a day to explore Corcovado National Park with one of the local guides at La Leona while you are there. Milton and Jim were both wonderful guides and taught us so much during our stay. Expect to experience breathtaking sunrises every morning and beautiful sunsets every night. Great atmosphere, amazing staff! Cannot wait to return again!

From Quepos/Manuel Antonio to Carate on the OSO peninsula next to Corcovado park entrance it is about a 5-hour drive. Three of the 5 hours are spent driving on pavement and the other 2 hours are on a well-maintained dirt road. A 4x4 is a good idea but not necessary unless. The drive from Manuel Antonio is beautiful once you get off the main highways. Incredible mountainous country roads through the jungle and fincas. It is truly stunning so don’t be in a huge rush. We saw Coatimundi, Toucans, and neat tropical forest birds like the Great Curassow. Never saw that before! You will also see an awesome display of every finca animal you can think of. ||Once you get to Carate, La Leona has a base camp where you can securely park your car as you set out for about an hour-long hike to the beautiful La Leona Eco Lodge. You need to get there by 3 or 4 pm. I would not suggest walking in the jungle at night. If you get there early enough or perhaps decide ahead of time, they can bring your stuff to the Lodge via a very charming horse carriage (see pic) that they use to bring supplies, weary travelers, and heavy bags. Nevertheless, if they know you are on your way, and it gets late, they will collect you to ensure you safely arrive. Normally, this would be no different from arriving at your campsite, but La Leona is so much more than that. My expectations were high and I was not disappointed. ||They have wonderful cabinas that provide what you need. For me, that was a beautiful view, with no Wi-Fi, street noise, and unlimited opportunities to see animals and nature and just get away and relax. There is no electricity in the cabin or WIFI. But you do get a lot of candles and the walkways are well-lit. I used my phone flashlight. A regular flashlight would be better. Also, maybe an easy-to-carry stationary light for the cabin. |They serve breakfast lunch and dinner but there is no menu. We had breakfast and dinner and had smoothies in between. If you give them enough notice, they can probably accommodate any reasonable diet restrictions. ||The staff is truly fantastic. It was great to see everyone working well together. Sometimes, the restaurant was at full capacity, other times, it was maybe half full. Regardless. we received fabulous service. Felipe came and got us on your first day, Frank and Hidekel were like the ambassadors for the lodge. Always on hand to answer all our questions about the lodge, trails, the park, and animals.||One of the best things about staying there was the Coconut Spa. They have 3 different types of body treatments (Chocolate, Coffee, and Coconut) that combines fabulous exfoliating and hydrating creams and serums. Plus, they have a full range of massage options. I got the Coffee therapy; my friend got the Chocolate. There is something wonderful about getting a message in the middle of the Jungle. ||We stayed for a long weekend so arrived on a Friday and left on Monday morning. When you get there, you will find fabulous trails, plants, and wildlife all around you. Plus, you are just a 15-minute walk to the Corcovado Park ranger station and entrance. It was very important to me that I see the spider monkeys. I was not disappointed. A little troupe came down from wherever bounced around in the trees and did some flippy thing with their tails. Did you know that, unlike their other monkey counterparts, Spider monkeys only have 4 fingers? This is probably because their tail is so awesome. It is like another limb, they can hang upside down, etc. ||Overall, it was a wonderful stay in a truly fascinating and...
