We absolutely loved our stay at Kayak Lodge and couldn’t have asked for anything more. Marlene and her family are wonderful people and very gracious hosts; we felt like part of the family. The atmosphere was happy and relaxed.||We had a view of the mangroves from our room - we saw hummingbirds, kingfishers, herons and basilicas from the window. Other rooms surround the beautiful garden Marlene has cultivated. The room was clean, very spacious and had air con. The shower was great, and there is consistent WiFi throughout the property. It also had a hair dryer, which you don’t get everywhere. The breakfasts are enormous and delicious - nom nom nom! We especially enjoyed the homemade papaya smoothies. The swimming pool was a welcome bonus, and the water was the perfect temperature. ||We recommend the kayak tour of the mangroves, it’s great value - ours was about 3.5 hours with a wonderful guide called Maurilo, who has worked in the mangroves for around 25 years and is extremely knowledgable not only about the area and the plants, but also about conservation of mangroves. He clearly knew more than other guides we passed en route.||Kayak Lodge is a little out of town but the journey is easy if you have a car (there’s secure parking), and buses stop at the end of the road to take you to Quepos or Parque Manuel Antonio if you don’t. If you want to stay outside the tourist traps in town and get a more natural feel of Tico life, this is the place to do it.||Muchos...
Read moreWe were limited by our choice of hotels as we visited in December in high season. We were able to get a room for 4 at the Lodge. It is out of the way but not too much. Quepos and Manuel Antonio are a 15-20 m drive from the lodge. ||||The room was very large but the bathroom was cramped and both were outdated. Each could use updates in terms of linens, wall color and furniture, The lighting was also very dim. However, the room was very clean and we did not lack in terms of hospitality and friendly advice. The wifi is excellent!||||The owner Marlenee, manages with an assortment of people who speak English. Andrea, who works from breakfast time until evening is invaluable to running the place. She does everything right from checking guests in to taking care of all their needs. She also offers massages on site for a very reasonable rate.||||We did not do the kayak tour but their on site guide Maurioleo is excellent as a park guide and kayak tours. I would highly recommend one or both his tours.||||Breakfast is the standard costa rican fare. There is a recreation room which we used everyday. A great benefit if you don't want to venture out in the evening and need something to do. ||||We had a great experience. It wasn't luxurious but given our budget and availability of rooms, we...
Read moreI actually stayed here a few years back (2010) but I've never forgotten it as it was an amazing place to stay. The owners Marleen and Bernard couldn't have been nicer to me. I was travelling alone and they made me feel so welcome and at home. Marleen took me out on a kayak tour which I loved even though it was hard work. We made our way through the river, past lots of little crabs, snakes and monkeys, all the way out to the Pacific Ocean. On the way we stopped off at a little island where only a few single men stayed in makeshift type homes. I stayed in the huge apartment next to the river which had picture windows overlooking the mangrove forest. The monkeys would come flying through the tree's over the river and climb all over the roof. Iguana's would be outside my door in the morning. I did try to post a review at the time but for one reason or the other it didn't work. I would love to go back one day as it was definitely an experience I would...
