I stayed at Villa Zurqui for a long weekend. I greatly enjoyed the natural setting of the place. If you like flowers, fresh fruits, and a peaceful oasis right outside the city, this place is for you. It was also very convenient to a chocolate artisan factory (a little over a mile, we walked) and to the Britt coffee plantation in the same general area (but not as close as the chocolate factory). It is also an ideal launching point for the Braulio Carrillo Park (20-30 miles) for those planning on taking advantage of hiking, zip lining, etc. The cabins/rooms are plain and spacious, with TV with cable. The bathroom is spacious and hot water was quickly available. My room had a fireplace and a small balcony overseeing the grounds of the property. It did not have A/C but it actually was colder than I expected so the nice extra blanket was appreciated (should have used the fireplace!). The staff was friendly and spoke good English. The main building had good, fast wifi. The included breakfast was typical to the area and was a meal onto itself. They had fresh fruit available (guava, bananas, mangos, etc.). Yanina, the owner, was very helpful and made sure we had what we needed while we were here. If you want a more authentic experience (which I hope you do!), I'd recommend this place. It is not by the ocean, it is not high-end, but it is cozy...
Read moreNormally, when I book a hotel near San Jose, is because I am on a business trip. I don't like to stay at cheap places but I hate spending a fortune as well. I had seen Villa Zurqui before; it is really close to the turnpike on route 32 (Braulio Carillo). I called to check if they had rooms available; the staff on the phone was always very kind and willing to answer all my questions. This is a reasonably-priced hotel; I believe that it is hard to find all the amenities that they offer with such good rate.||||I have to say that the room was very cold. This shouldn't be a surprise because like I already mentioned, this hotel is close to a mountainous area. Also, the bed linens could improve (they were clean and smelled fine. It's just that seemed a little old). This hotel offers unique privacy and a peaceful stay.||||Their restaurant is open until 9pm. I have to say that even when I got past 9pm to the restaurant, they were very kind to sell me a couple of drinks. ||||Another positive thing is that breakfast was already included in the rate; it was a typical costarican breakfast: "Pinto" (a combination of rice and beans), eggs, toast, fried plantains, and of course... all the coffee I could drink. ||||If you are not looking for luxuries and and you are also on a budget, then I suggest you try this hotel. I would definetely...
Read moreMy wife and I celebrated our 25th Wedding Anniversary at Villa Zurqui. The property was nothing like what I expected - it was better! The Orchids on property were beautiful, the rooms were small, private and simple. I wanted to celebrate time with my wife not sit in bed, watch TV or connect to Wifi. For that I could have stayed home and lost out on the Costa Rican experience. ||||We walked the property, felt very safe while doing so. There are two trout fishing areas on property. One of the coolest things was that we fished at the ponds, and our catch was prepared that evening for us as dinner. YUM! ||||Since this was my first trip to Costa Rica, I really had no idea of things to do. The hotel owner, sat with my wife and I shared some areas of recommendations. We hit every area recommended and had an amazing time - returning to the States with over 500-pictures of our adventure. ||||It is plain and simple - if you are a traveler who requires internet, TV and luxuries of a 4-5 Star hotel, then by all means go stay at a Chain and pay 3-4X the standard Costa Rican cost. If you would like to see Costa Ricas beauty as it is mean to be enjoyed - then stay at the Villa Zurqui - take in the atmosphere and enjoy "PURA VIDA"...
