I have traveled to many tropical islands but Costa Rica and the area around Tilaran and Arvenal are just shockingly beautiful. Monte Terras is an excellent based from which to see it from. The whole area is a little remote so be prepared for some rough roads and a bit of a drive but it's worth it. For the property itself the cabins are way nicer than any cabin I have stayed at. So think of it as between a cabin and a hotel room. It is very clear that the owner has put thought and consideration into designing the cabins. He's quite tall (Dutch) and the beds are long enough and the ceilings are very nice and high. It feels quite spacious and open. Lovely sitting area in front of the cabin. Nice woodwork throughout.||||The owner is quite hospitable and helpful about local traveling tips. I went during the rainy season so hardly anyone was there but in the high season I'm sure he has all his cabins booked and the beautiful restaurant open. There is an optional $5/pp breakfast which includes delicious pancakes. Coffee was excellent as well. ||||We had a unit with a small kitchen and were able to cook dinner. It's small but contains a good set of dishes and pots. Adequate to do some simple cooking. Really appreciated the fridge. There is a hot plate but there was no microwave.||||The grounds are very well kept. But the cabins have a few issues that keep this from being an completely excellent property. They are minor but for some people they maybe issues so I'll list them here:||||1) There isn't enough light in the cabin. During the day I had all the light on and it was challenging to read. In the evening ( at 6:00 is is dark!) I was trying to cook and the kitchen area doesn't have enough light to see what you are cutting. Same with the bathroom. There are low watt LED lights that could improve the experience and take the same energy.||||2) The bathroom shower has great hot water but the shower head creates diffuse mist instead of stream so it is very hard to get soap off or wash hair. I'm used to low water flow shower heads but this one just makes a mist and there is no adjustment. A second problem is that the shower area does not have a curtain which means that there is water ask over the bathroom which is messy and slippery. I would install a simple curtain to keep the water in the shower bay.||||||This property is nearly excellent and these few tweaks would get it there in my mind. I would stay there again in any case just the way it is now and I recommend it highly as a base from which to tour an most...
Read moreMy husband and I stayed here as a stop over on the way from La Fortuna to Monteverde. Even before we arrived Kees was wonderfully helpful. We asked about activities locally on the lake and told him we would like to go kayaking and he immediately advised we could hire from him and that he would drive us to the lake and back with the kayaks. This was perfect! He took us to a great secluded spot where we happily spent 2 hours out of the wind on the lake (it is quite windy here in December) until Kees came to collect us. ||||The cabin itself was very clean, comfortable and well equipped (even with second bedroom with 2 further single beds). The main bed was big and comfortable (we had the blue cabin). There’s a lovely area to sit outside the cabin too. ||||We had dinner at a lovely local pizzeria “Gutierrez Family Pizzeria Express” in Tronadora recommended by Kees and the food was excellent. ||||I must say that the main event not to be missed at Monte Terras is breakfast! You can add this as extra and I would say do it without a doubt. I think this was probably the best breakfast we had during our whole 2 week trip in Costa Rica. I had the pancakes and my husband had the classic Costa Rican breakfast, both of us ordered the smoothies. You give your order the night before and the time you would like it and it is delivered fresh to your cabin!||||We had a wonderful (if very short) stay and would highly recommend Monte Terras and Kees as a...
Read moreStayed a full month. What an experience! Loved it! Being the Amazing host he is, Kees picked us from LIR for a nominal fee. A service my family cant thank him enough for.
Cabin was spotless thanks to Griselda, it had everything we needed including a fully functional kitchen which was so very important for our autistic daughter.
For 2 weeks we were without a rental car, but the location had multiple shops in 5 min walkable distance, the walks were memorable, made so many friends even though we didnt speak Spanish. The locals made us feel home.
The view was just heavenly, with lake Arenal right in front and the wind was strong, fresh and soul touching and even the clear view of the majestic Arenal Volcano, we felt truly blessed!
Kees arranged a car for us after 2 weeks at unbeatable rates, v helpful again. La Fortuna and Monte Verde both easily accessible from here.
The swimming pool was the cherry on top, Kees takes a lot of pain to keep it very clean, with so many trees around, we were surprised to find it in sparkling condition always.
Various varieties of birds plenty of Tucans, butterflies, local sloth in the garden and so much more, Kees even brought a fire beetle to our door to show us, fascinating bug like a fire fly, also which there is plenty of.
Kees, Griselda, Victoria and especially Cookie lille doggie our local guide will always be unforgettable! We will...
